Scholarships/Grants for Minorities/Grant Writing

O.K. I have two question. One, does anybody know of any good Grants/Scholarships for Minorities. I've been to the bookstore looking for books on Grants/Scholarships for Grad school but have been unsuccesful. I'm apply to grad school for the fall of 2007. I'm applying for Counselor Education and Social Work so I'm trying to find grants/scholarships. Also, I was wondering if anyone writes grants for non-profit organizations. A friend of mine and I are thinking about taking a class to learn how to do this, and I'm just wondering if anyone is already involved with this and can give me some insite on how it's actually done.

As far as grants / scholarships for grad school, did you fill out the FAFSA (federal financial aid form) and submit that? that should be your first step. Secondly, did you inquire at your schools financial aid office. Many times, as was the case with me, there might be some funds allocated to minority students providing that they have submitted the necessary, sometimes extra paper, paperwork that the fin. aid office requires.

Finally, if your in the NY area, I know that my grad school offers a good non- profit grant writing courses that I plan to take (it's a key part of my major). The only thing is that I think it's only offered during the summer . . . I hope that it was somewhat helpful . . .sorry i'm not a grant writing expert.

I am an executive director of a nonprofit and a part of my duties is to seek funding through grants. Also I have worked for foundations. What specifically would you like to know? Feel free to PM me.

That's the thing about graduate school, you will not be able to write a grant until you are in grad school doing some kind of research...

And the government only gives grants to faculty members as recognized by the department.

Other outside non-profits/charitable organizations give grants to various groups and individuals. One example is AKA EAF.

As far as grant writing course, you are supposed to learn that information while in graduate school. The university must have some sort of office for you to do your research on all kinds of funding mechanisms. The FASFA is one avenue and you are to pursue all leads... The other is going to your career center/scholarship center or library (university or private) and doing your research... Then you need to befriend all administrators and professors willing to write you things... Then you get 10 official transcripts ready to send, more if you need them...

Key items the scholarships and grants will want to know is if we pay for this, what are you going to do for us? Why do you want our money? What do you think is important about this cause or educational goal? Can you justify it or prove it.

I have submitted 2 National Institutes of Health grants. 1 Susan G. Komen local community grant that got funded. Several minority supplement NIH grants that have gotten funded. 1 grant from UNCF/Merck for my dissertation.
