Sorority Bags?

When I was in college (96-00) every chapter on campus did bags every year. Sometimes they were simple with letters sewn on sometimes they were sayings but each NM class got a different bag. I ended up with quite few because I had 2 willed to me, was a NM educator so I got those classes bags and then my own. I assumed this was a fairly common practice to have bags for the whole chapter til I started talking my my cousin who is in a different sorority at a different college. She said no chapters at her school do this. My question is are bags common for whole chapters to get?

im sure other chapters do this, but not necessarily bags... maybe its a shirt, or some type of novelty item. one org on my campus does a class banner, sort of like a homemade composite.

i know, off-topic.

it really could be just your campus, you know. which is fine, gives it character. maybe youll bring the tradition to another campus?

p.s i think its cute.

My chapter created a bag 2 years ago for everyone to get just for fun. We liked them so much that we made them part of our bid night gifts and started giving them out to the NMs with their bids.

All of our new members get bags on bid day and the sisters can order those same bags if we would like.

Thanks for the info. I know my bag collection is one of my favorite sorority things because as a teacher I haul everything to school in them.

I've never heard of anyone doing this, although it sounds like a cute tradition. Personally, I can count on both hands with fingers left over the number of girls who had sorority bags from all 4 sororities on campus (I was one of them!).

My chapter made some one year as a retreat event. I've made some some and given them some of the other girls. Not many on campus have bags. The ones that do have them either made them or bought them from the Greek Vendor during NM Presentation.

What is really funny is to look at some of the bags that get willed to people. One of mine is a blue bag with Sigmas in bright pink over a white grid type of logo. It cracks me up, because it was made in the 80's but is back in style. I have a three classic looking ones with plain/ sewin on letters. My fav is black with with circles on it made of skull and bones, sailboats, violets then letters. Actually counting all the bacgs I have I maybe have 7 or 8 total. I found 2 more when I was cleaning out my classroom last week. Some sororities kept the same bags so that everyone knew them, but most chapters did a different bag for each NM class.

OMG, at first this a thiught of Old GLO Sororitys Bags=Old Ladies!

Thank goodness it is not!

But things that can be passed sown from Sister to Sister are very nice and can hold a lot of feelings for years.

It used to be paddles that may have been used for hazing, but this can be a positive thing that will live forever!

Good for You all!

HA! One of my favorite memories was receiving my first sorority bag. They're fun because you can use them a lot more than just letters, and personalize them

Bitch Bags

I go to the university of toledo and most sorority girls have sorority bags...many of the people on campus who are independants call refer to our bags as "Bitch Bags" us greek ladies have kinda just rolled with the nickname because we are unphased. Now the smaller bags are starting to be called "Bitchettes" kinda like baguettes. Everyone gets their own bag. for most chapters its after initiation into the chapter. in my chapter the bigs buy thier littles their bags. in my family in particular the big gets to pick out the colors/patterns with help from the little but its a suprise as to which one we actually pick out. other fams just let the little pick whatever they want. im a rho gamma right now and i want nothing more than to have my bitch bag back cause i love my letters!!!

BTW, a fair amount of girls on my campus have totes (mostly plain canvas color with block letters). If I remember right, I think AKA had matching totes one year in black with green and pink letters.

ETA: However, I think that was the only instance of everyone in a sorority (or everyone in a class) getting matching tote bags.

Baguettes are also a type of bag usually long and thin like the bread.

I like the idea, and have even toyed with the thought of getting one through our emporium, but I have so many bags it's ridiculous anyhow.

I have a black large tote with purple/silver letters, a small black tote with purple letters, and a blue tote with checkered letters that was left over from my VP of Alum position. I still use them every once in awhile because I carry a purse that holds my keys, cell, and wallet when I even carry a purse. So I have a tote in my trunk, just in case I need to carry more stuff.
