Watermelon Bash/Bust/Fest Events

Our chapter does our Watermelon Bust at the end of September. Last year we had:
Seed Spitting, Watermelon Design Contest, Tug-O-War, Greased Watermelon Pass, Wheelbarrow Race, Strainer Game, and a coin find in a pool of watermelons.

Im wondering what events other chapters do for their events and what they also do for the philanthropic side of Watermelon Bust/Bash/Fest

Also; if anyone does an obstacle course, give me some ideas!!!

Fullerton would like a copy, too

Fullerton has never done a watermelon bust; if you get any good material, could you forward it along.

Thanks

If you wish to post on the LXA Thread, feel free to do so, but the last post was totally uncalled for and will not be tolerated by either Mod on this thread!

Unhappy

I must have missed it.

I went to a Watermelon Bust at the Univ. of Arizona back in 1996 and had a blast... a few years later the chapter there was gone...

Some of the brothers came down from ASU for the event. Not long later their chapter was gone...

About 2 years later I was in Albuquerque during UNM's homecoming and went by the Lambda Chi house a bit after Watermelon Bust was over and got a shirt. Eight years later the chapter there was gone...

Sometimes I feel like the angel of death.

In answer to Your question, it was a Photo Poster that was not apropo to the feelings and teachings of LXA and totaly not exceptable.

There is nothing wrong with The Watermelon Bust. The Poster was wrong.

a fun event

We actually did this one in elementary school, but its great at WM Bust too.

THE BAT RACE:
Teams of 3 or 4 go one at a time.
Run a short distance (15 yards or so) to where a baseball bat is on the
ground.
Pick up the bat, one end on the ground, other end on the forehead.
Player must spin around the bat 10 times.
If the bat ever "comes loose" from forehead or ground, start all over
with the count.
Player then has to (try to) run back to their team, then the next member
goes. (this is the fun part....people are so "drunk" they can't run straight...
and NO ALCOHOL involved!)
First team to get everybody back wins!

I know, it doesn't involve a WM as described, but you can get creative.
Like requiring the player to carry a watermelon during the "running" part,
without breaking it.

Of couse someone might get smart: spin 6 turns clockwise, then 4 turns
counter-clockwise, and you won't be as "drunk". So you might add the
rule that all spins must be in the same direction.

P.S. - this is an old game we did in elem. school and at WM Bust. It might
be deemed "hazing" and/or "a violation of risk policies" today...not sure.
They did outlaw dodge ball ya know! I know we can't haze AM's, but is
it OK to haze sorority girls???? (or be hazed by sorority girls?)

UNC-Charlotte has never done a Watermelon Bust before. But i was just elected into High Delta and I have already written up the event. I would love to share it with other chapters and compare. 1 big difference about ours than some is that we are opening it to sororities and fraternities, as well as residence halls. I would really like to know how everyone gets their Watermelons donated to them, that is going to be my hardest obsticle. Here is a list of the 11 event we are going to hold so far, with other possibilities:

Canned Food Drive
Greased Watermelon Relay(4parts)
Greased Watermelon Toss
Watermelon Discus Toss
Watermelon Eating Contest(2man event)
Watermelon Roll
Watermelon Seed Spitting
Watermelon Decorating Contest
Watermelon Smashing Contest
Miss Watermelon Bust 2007

Thinking about having a Watermelon Dunk Contest and Watermelon Twister

Some of our favorite events are the strainer game (two girls 10ft apart, one with a strainer on her head the other throwing watermelon guts trying to fill the strainer in the shortest amount of time) and a tug of war with a pool of watermelons in the middle.

We get our watermelons donated from a farm less than an hour away. After watermelon season the farmer basically just leaves the melons to rot so we just fill up a truck load before they rot and bust and it takes them off the farmers hand and we dont have to pay anything.

Oh the watermelon event.

What we liked to do was heat up the oven, then cut a small hole in the watermelon, then put the watermelon into the oven.......

wait.....um.....I mean we used to um.....

nevermind.

WHAT'S THAT BEHIND YOU!!!!

*runs away*

Hey guys,

I am trying to start our chapter's first Watermelon Bust/Bash to get involved with another sorority on campus, have fun, and help raise money for Food Drive. The past posts have been very helpful with ideas, but i was wondering if there are any big problems that any of you have run into while trying to set it up? Just so i have some things to look out for if necessary. Thanks a lot!

Just make sure things are prepared ahead of time. We get there at least an hour before the girls to break all the watermelons up, fill up containers and a pool for games, etc.

Also realize your surroundings will become very messy and hard to keep organized.

We did a seed spitting contest one year and everythign was covered with watermelon and it was difficult to judge where the seeds were landing and who the winners were, etc.

Good Luck!

Our chapter has been doing a Watermelon Bust for as long as I can remember. PM me with your email and I'll forward you our packets if you want.

As for potential problems, the biggest one is always planning and organization. Make sure there is someone clearly in charge that can be the go-to guy when the coaches are confused about something. If your campus allows it, a megaphone can really help.

That reminds me about a problem we hit last September....the space we reserved weeks in advance was caution-taped off for grass seed planting when we got there. Needless to say we were a bit irate, but used the space anyway, since our reservation was still there. The consequences: the automatic sprinklers came on right before we were about to start and we had to race around finding the grounds crew guy that could turn them off. Made the slip n slide that much more fun!

An "off-line" GA session

I know absolutely nothing about watermelon busts although they seem to be taking on a distinctive LXA feel. How about an off-line session at GA where the Watermelon Bashers could share what and how they do that voodoo that they do. We can meet in my room if anyone would like to do so.

Sounds great, I planned ours last year and it was successful. The key when determining what to do is all about your campus. Larger schools with more predominant Greek systems can go ALL out and this that or the other, but the smaller schools need to not OVER do it and create one to fit their own campus.

Anyone else on GC rolling to Phoenix... I will be getting there a day early to enjoy Arizona.

I always liked "Melon in a Haystack". Each sorority was assigned a number, number was written on their watermelon and hidden in a haystack, first sorority representative to find their melon was the winner.
