New House Ideas
Hey all, my fraternity just recently left university provided greek houses and found a spot for ourselves off-campus. The school had real issues with what we could put up in the house as well as bringing in any furniture that wasn't university approved.
So now that we have a house of our own we need ideas on how to decorate. We have our own paddles and composites, as well as a few awards and plaques, but what else is there?
What kind of stuff do other organizations have in their house, we don't have the room for a pool table, but we've discussed foosball tables and what not.
Hopefully things that can help us rush well, we definetly want a kid to walk in and go "wow."
Signs, mirrors, any other ideas?

Well first of all, what kind of house is it? And do you already have the furniture and whatnot to put in it? You should definitely look into getting a trophy case to accent your awards and accomplishments if you don't already have one.

Set yourself apart from the rest of campus, and keep it classy. Everybody in college does the beer sign and trashy look, so do something else. The best houses I've seen look like country club clubhouses rather than collegiate dorms. But then, I like stuff like that.

For the chapter on a budget...
1. Dart Board
2. Three Couches that don’t match
3. Custom Beer Pong Table
4. Big Screen TV (If you can’t afford one buy one from goodwill, sure the picture might suck but hey it’s a big screen)
5. Miscellaneous Liquor Bottles to adorn the highest shelf in the house
6. Broken Lazy Boy Recliner

Interesting Question and wonder why?
What the heck does this have to do with a different House?

What does a house mean during rush? You shouldn't need to use your house to sell your chapter, it should be a part of the equation, but in no ways is it going to bring in quality.

Sounds like every fraternity house I've ever been in.

Thats pretty sad if that is the extent of the fraternity houses you have been in. In the South, I am used to seeing fraternity houses that are fashioned after Southern and plantation homes and architecture....with beautiful furnishings. I would say our house in Austin is a mix between a country club and ranch style/Texas hill country type design. Lots of river rock, wrought iron, oak, etc.

The key words being in the south. All of the houses I've been in have been in the North. Slight difference.

I wouldn't say that all of the "nice" fraternity houses are in the South. PSU has some that are really beautiful, inside and outside. CMU's used to be nice; I'm not sure how they've gone lately.
I'd definitely have the shelving or trophy cases to display your awards, but I wouldn't put up too many mirrors. A room with a foosball table doesn't have to look trashy, just comfortable without looking ratty.
OR... you could contact one of those television shows that specializes in meeting a decorating challenge. It's worth a shot, and just think of the publicity!

I wasn't trying to imply that they are. I guess maybe my post came off that way. With the exception of one, all of the houses that I've been in have been houses that a couple of brothers rented, not ones bought and paid for by nationals. The ex-boyfriend's fraternity house was owned by the fraternity house and was really nice.... on the outside.
