How many teachers are on GC?

I've noticed quite a few people on GC are teachers. Just curious to see exactly how many and the subjects/grades taught.

I teach 7th grade English as a Second Language. This will be my 2nd year teaching at this grade level.

I have taught 1st grade (4 years), 2nd grade (4 years), PE (k-6, 1 year), and Remedial Reading (1-3, 1 year).

And, even on the long days when the kids are acting like little punks, I still love teaching.

I'm a former high school teacher. My B.S. is in Journalism & my M.S. is in Education (exceptional education).

I started off teaching Varying Exceptionalities classes (English, Social Studies - all 9-12), and then ended my career teaching journalism (newspaper & TV production).

I taught for 9 years, then just got fed up with the whole system...and left. I loved working with students - even the delinquents - but I can't stand administrators & other teachers!

I used to teach middle school science for about a year and a half.

Then I substitute-taught while I was in library school.

I am now a children's librarian at a public library. So I do quite a bit of educational activities.

I'm married to one. She teaches band, orchestra, yearbook, and newspaper at a local charter high school with the mission of getting 'traditionally underserved' kids to college (they're an AVID school if you know what that means).

Me too. I taught for 5 years and the administration can really cause you to lose your love.

KT Snake, I was the AVID coordinator at my last school so I know what you mean.

I started out as a horticulture professor but now teach college and secondary Spanish. The kids haven't changed much over the years but boy, the parents have...they'll be in there in 2 seconds screaming if their darling gets a 98 instead of his usual 100. Even on the college level. I haven't had to deal with parents actually harassing college profesors yet but some of my colleagues have.

My husband teaches secondary science. Two of my daughters who are already degreed in other fields may go into teaching.

I am an elementary teacher. I usually "loop" from first to second grade with my class. I am getting ready to start my 17th year. Wow, I can't believe I have stuck with it that long. Like many of the other posters have mentioned, working with the children is incredible. NCLB and administration -- well that's another story all together!

Teaching was very tough indeed. You are under scrutiny all the time. Somebody is always criticizing you for the pettiest little things. Even if you did everything right.

But my worst memory from teaching did not have to do with the students. My first principal made my life impossible.

I admire teachers very much. However, I cannot go back to it- at least not at this point in my life. I can tell librarianship is my true call.

I currently teach 7th and 8th grade life and earth science.
Next year, I'll be up in high school, teaching College Prep Biology and Ecology/Marine Science. I can't wait!

This summer, I'm teaching Oceanography in Hawaii.

I understand about principals. I had fantastic principals: supportive, great. Until 2 years ago. My new principal apparently had a problem with male teachers. Out of the 10 male teachers in our building, 8 left at the end of the year. All of us were constantly being told that we were not running our classrooms properly - without being told what we were doing wrong or how to correct it. Each one of us were replaced with female teachers.

But, now I am enjoying teaching middle school. They can be tough, but I think that middle school kids get a bad rap. You just have to let them know what you will and won't put up with and stick with it.

I was a long-term substitute teacher for two years, with my longest assignments being sixth grade, fifth grade, first grade, and fourth grade. I then became an aide for two kindergarten classes for about a year. I then made a quantum leap and became a Site Director for an afterschool program. So now I teach college students how to tutor elementary school kids.

Without my experience in the trenches as a sub and as an aide, I'd never have the cred to be a site director.

I am a Kindergarten teacher, this will be my third year. I have always loved children and always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I hear what everyone is saying about parents and administrators...sometimes they get in the way of your teaching!!
