Cancelling Everwood and bringing back 7th Heaven.

Freaking CW! I'm sure you know that the WB and some other channel,( I think UPN?) are merging and they just released their fall line up.

They're RENEWING 7th Heaven. The only reason that the ratings were high for the final episode is because it was supposed to be the FINAL EPISODE.

They canceled Everwood for this.

Also, they kept Veronica Mars and One Tree Hill, both of which had lower ratings than Everwood. WTF?

Maybe they couldn't think of anything to fill the Monday @ 8 pm spot?

Actually it's because they have a new show on Mondays called "Runaway" and they probably wanted a strong show to lead it and probably picked 7th Heaven becuase of that.

I used to watch 7th Heaven when it was decent but cannot watch it anymore b/c 1. lost interest 2. I was really busy 3. the plot lines are just silly and unrealistic. Anyway, it's supposedly the highest rated show on the WB so it would make sense to bring it back. The only reason why it was "series finale" for a while b/c it cost too much to make... for the WB now it's CW they is a lot of money left over, and they thought they can cover 7th heaven in terms of production costs.

If I was a network exec, I would renew 7th Heaven over Everwood for the fact it's more bankable and possibly can help new shows lead in and I think Runaway is a family drama which is a compliment to 7th Heaven. I always thought Everwood was hanging by a thread and just thought it would too much of a risk to bring back to lead in for a new show.

That's my 2 cents on the whole thing

I wonder what Everwood's ratings were like? I watched it when it first came on, but haven't watched it in years. I'd at least occasionally watch 7th Heaven, but I couldn't even tell you what time Everwood was on this year.

It all comes down to money, so I guess it just wasn't financially a good show to keep.

Uh, right after 7th heaven.

And yeah, 7th heaven was the 1 show on the WB, but Everwood(9) still outranked Veronica Mars(23) and One Tree Hill(18). Both of which are still on the air.

Just like anything else, this is a business. Fan support played a huge role in all of this. Cost of production played a huge role in what was picked up. And ratings weren't accounted for at all after it was announced that the two stations would merge. I'm a huge VM fan and kept close track of all that was going on with this and there are tons of factors as to why VM and OTH were renewed and Everwood wasn't.

Veronica Mars seems to have a really big cult following, and there were a lot of people being very vocal about it on the internet and in the media.

One Tree Hill seems to appeal to the younger crowd, which is always a good thing when it comes to advertisers.

Everwood didn't necessarily have a strong target audience that stands out for me. Perhaps one or more of the characters didn't want to stay with the show. Perhaps it just wasn't going to get the demographics CW will be aiming for. It probably did enjoy the number 9 rating b/c it was on directly after 7th Heaven and had the spillover (now I know why I didn't watch it, I would put on the Apprentice at 9). Maybe Everwood outran its storyline and there wasn't much left to do with it.

We'll probably never know. They couldn't possibly keep all of the shows, so I guess something's gotta go, and someone somewhere will be ticked about it no matter what they choose.

Ostroff actually came out and said that they decided to keep 7th Heaven because they wanted the big ratings to be a lead in for the new Donnie Walhberg show. 7th Heaven got Everwoods spot in the lineup.

VM has a huge cult following that has put together huge fan efforts to get the show renewed. The whole "Look to the Skies" Campaign was the biggest thing I'd ever heard of as far as that type of stuff goes.

OTH is probably cheap as hell to produce because of all the blatent product placements it has. Supposedly the creator signed huge deals which would definitely knock the cost of production down. Plus OTH has a huge tween/teen following that advertisers like.

This indicates to me that what someone said in the 7th Heaven thread is probably true- they are probably going to end up with a "cheaper" cast. Annie/Eric/Lucy/Simon/etc, will probably become more like what Jessica Biel was this season and they'll shift to another part of the "story" for awhile...like what they did for Jason London & Rachel Blanchard. They'll also have to hire three sets of twins, talk about budget!

In any case, I still say that they will get what they pay for. Although I think any of the main cast that renews their contracts are crazy and are screwing themselves for future work, as the show can only go downhill from where it left off.

It's not like they have any other offers coming in.. Besides BW and JB, none of the others have worked on stuff during hiatus.

Stephen Collins does all kinds of odd jobs.
Catherine Hicks used to do alot of made-for-TV stuff, and could proabaly go back to that.
David Gallagher has a movie version of the book "Dorian Grey" coming out soon.
Beverly Mitchell has a movie called "I Remember" that she's a supporting actress filim right now. She's done a few Disney channel movies and had a bit part in SawII.
George Sults has a movie called Night Skies in post production.

Really, none of them has any offers??

PS I'm not that much of a 7th Heaven geek. I used imdb.com.

I wouldn't really call a lot of that "offers". They're much better off doing 7th Heaven and having a steady income than doing bit parts and random made for tv roles that usually don't pay much at all. No one has really had any decent parts on the side.

Ok, so they have offers, but I also don't recall any of them being offered pilots or anything. And I don't consider a few different disney movies as being on the same level as Kristin Bell who has 3 or 4 movies coming out, one of which premiered at Tribeca.

My point is, actors who walk away from a show (like Jessica Biel sort of did/tried to do) while the ratings are still high seem to have a much better career afterwards, then those who stay on a show until it's gone into the ground and the ratings become crap.

Other example: Johnathon Taylor Thomas, who left Home Improvement before the ratings took a dive. Have you seen much of the other two kids since?? And before someone says "Well Tim Allen survived that show", he was already a well-established actor before the show.

JTT did a few movies then disappeared and only shows up on E! or VH1 every now and then.

It's the nature of showbiz, I guess.
