We have a 2-mile stretch of HWY on the busiest HWY in the state - for 'Adopt-a-Highway' cleanup. About 10,000 vehicles per day pass our 'Beta Theta Pi' sign on the HWY - can't get any better publicity than that.

Sounds like you're looking for a charity/fundraiser idea, right?

Events put on by other houses:
Valentines, Poker, Billiards, Dodgeball, Football, Meal Skips, Tug of War, Mud Volleyball, Raffles, Foosball, Pie Throwing, Kickball, Chocolate Twister

Ideas off Beta site:
Sports Tournaments, _-a-thons, Beta 500, Operation Outreach, Concerts, Cook-offs, 5/10k runs, Auctions, Raffles, Donated Wages, Holiday Collections, Flower/Plant Sales, Car washes, Heroes for Hope

Fright Week, Jail and Bail, Songfest, Pagenats, Keg-a-Rama, and the granddaddy of them all Pillow Fighting.

Before you go off and start planning something it would be wise to evaluate the success and/or failure of the philanthropies of other greek houses so you wouldn't fall in their footsteps. You need to establish clear goals and develop a mission to use when approaching others with the idea. You may want to focus your efforts on an event such as Dance Marathon, which is already highly successful and well established. This will open up time for your chapter to hold more service projects within the community, and have greater participation in the philanthropies of other greeks.

Sorry to crash guys but...

One of the fraternities on our campus would sit on campus across the street from the two major bars on Fri. and Sat. nights and sell Papa Johns or Dominos pizzas. They got a deal from the pizza company and people really liked it because drunk food is fun and they didn't have to wait for delivery.(Actually for a Dominos guy would bring a stack of pizzas to campus and wander around and sell them to people.)

Just thought I'd share

Lightbulb Don't Shot

One reason the Boy Scouts of America does not allow Troops to do paintballing as an organized activity is because it is humans shooting humans.

I would prefer not to see Beta Theta Pi tied to shooting other Frats, even it is for charity. Play "off the record."

All the other ideas listed above are solid. Just check to see what works in your area and kick it up a notch or two.

thats a good idea... at our campus, sororities LOVE to compete with one another, and the fraternities play off that hardcore. There are all kind of sorority competitions and usually the winning sorority gets a free bar party with the fraternity.

We only have 6 sororities on campus, but they usually get about 5,000-10,000 dollars, which is pretty good for a campus of 2,300... im sure it would be a hell of alot more on a bigger campus...

Or, it would be cool to have a Beta Rose competition with individual girls, and you could have like a friendly week-long competition where girls get points for the money they get in a jar in the Student Union (coins are positive points, dollars are negative, it causes people to get competitive), and girls get points on how many Beta Rose competition t-shirts they get people to buy (profits go to the charity), then have like a community service day, and a day of fun activities like a trivia comp... etc. You would get the girls by nomination, or ask each sorority to toss someone in, or both...

We do vallet parking, typically for charity events. We live in a rich town so there is alot to be made in tips, especially when they people are told its for charity.

Also, on Halloween we have a caremel apple table out on the main street of the village. People love it!

Plus, in the stressful times, we put up a tent on the academic quad with our air hockey table and etc. We get our school president to play against our school student affairs person, the two big-wigs on campus to play each other, and that usually gets alot of people out to watch. From there we get some good business.

I know one group on campus does a laundry service, which I dont know how successful that is.

My chapter's philanthropy benefits the Mario Lemiuex Cancer Foundation.

We have a week in which sorority compete in coin collections, finding Beta's and signing their shirts, a raffle for memorbilia, an auction for jersey's/pucks/etc, and currently a mechanical bull riding competition.

In the past we've done ultimate frisbee and the Beta Beauty pagent. The sororities loved the pagent because we send a guy down to each sorority and they pretty him up and teach him a talent. It can get pretty outrageous.

We have "UCF Idol." It's a singing competition and you have 3 fake judges that are just for show and then a pannel of real judges. Get donations from local businesses and do raffles and give prizes to the best and worst singers.

You could always have a Beta Boxing tournament...< Idea taken from Pike.

I seem to remember him mentioning that nickname/story last time he was here. I'll ask him again when he comes to visit us in June. He and the rest of your brothers are welcome to come visit eastern NC any time you like!

Beta Bowling - Strikes for Tikes

Our chapter started a philanthropy event this past February that we called "Beta Bowling - Strikes for Tikes". It benefits our local Children's Miracle Network, which directly finances our local children's hospital.

We solicited donors to pledge a certain amount of money ($.01, $.05, $.10, etc.) for each pin that was knocked down in a three-game event. The math is easy: If someone bowled three perfect games by knocking down 120 pins, and the donor chose to give $.01 for every pin, then they would donate $3.60. Some people chose that route, while others just made a flat donation of $5 to $100. We raised $1,500 very easily just by hitting up our families.

I'm hoping that we can double or triple that amount this year. All of the staff members at our CMN thought it was a great idea and we were highlighted on their local annual telethon.

A really cool event that was really successful and fun was a rock paper and scissors competition. What they did was had a monetary admission in exchange for fake money (cut up pieces of paper printed to resemble monopoly money), and you go around making bets, and you play at a table. Each table has a judge to make sure things are fair (have like 10 tables where people could just approach). The one with the most fake money won. They made a lot because, since it wasn't tourney style, people could buy themselves back in, meaning you make more. AND, this fraternity did it at the campus bar, so people who came to the bar got into it, and well, if you set something up with the local bar, you can arrange for a percentage of proceeds for charity, etc... Also, they had someone on mic for a large portion, presenting large wages, and getting the crowd really exciting.

It was really well thought out just because they had many was for them to collect for their charity.
