Boston Police Close Down Party - Underage Drinking (Delta Upsilon, MIT)

The article (above) reports that police shut down a party that about 250 people were attending at the Beacon Street townhouse of MIT's Delta Upsilon chapter. Long lines of people waiting to get in reportedly prompted neighbors to call the police. Besides underage drinking, the article reports on alleged fire/safety code violations.

A comment -- the article uses the word "frat" fairly often. I think this may be a case of the Boston Herald's writing for its audience; isn't it still the "downmarket" paper in Boston, while the Globe is the more upscale one?

I think they may use the term because it's what everyone uses up here, at least from what I've seen. I didn't know it was a bad word until I came onto GC. I always used it in college, and I think the collegiates I advise also do.

LauraLaylin's right - the Globe also uses the same term. It doesn't have anything to do with the audience.

As far as what happened - Beacon Street is an affluent area of Boston, and anytime something like that happens (line outside the door, loud party-goers), the police will be there. They actually have a good house (I was at a party there one summer during college), so I'm surprised they let the line get that out of control.

Thanks for the clarification / correction about the regional use of "frat." And KSigkid, thanks for the background about the location of the DU house. I can well imagine that neighbors wouldn't like lines or loud parties -- maybe not exactly a "NIMBY" reaction, but maybe a "NIMBB" one -- not in my Back Bay.

My brother is an MIT grad and an alumnus member of a different fraternity and he was always taught the "country/fraternity analogy".

I swear the Herald is pure propoganda. I mean, look at the picture that they put on the cover last year after the whole Victoria Snelgrove incident. It was just absolutely disgusting to look at.

In other news - One of the HS guys is in Delta Upsilon @ MIT.

and another comment - parties like that happen all the time here ( bridgewater state ), and sometimes cops just dont give a damn. throngs of underagers just walk out of the houses past the cops and peace out. you can't really get in trouble unless you're severly intoxicated and it shows, you're fighting, or they actually see you with a drink in your hand.

There is some decent stuff in the Herald, and a couple of good writers. The whole thing isn't trash (although the Snelgrove picture was over the edge).

As far as stuff like that happening all the time - houses are generally more careful, especially when they are right in the middle of the city (as this house is), and the Boston police generally has no patience for underage drinking. It's an upscale section, and the neighbors aren't too welcoming of college parties in general.

Maybe the Boston police have become more understanding, but I remember them being quite strict with this sort of thing.

No - I totally understand that. The town here isnt generally happy about all the parties that happen around here. Apparently there's like a committee to try to get rid of one of the "unofficial" houses ( kind of one that everyone just uses to party ) but nothings really happened from that. They're also trying to pass a law that more than college students in the area cannot live in a house purchased by parents unless the parents are living in the house (which alot of people around here do ).
