Al Lewis, grandpa on TV's "The Munsters," dies

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Al Lewis, best known for his role as Grandpa in television's "The Munsters," has died after a long illness, a local radio station said on Saturday.

I was surprised to learn:

Lewis worked in the 1930s to free the Scottsboro Boys -- nine black teenagers accused of raping two white women in another highly publicized case. All but one were sentenced to death, but eventually they were cleared.

He may have seemed sweet, but he was one of the most cantankerous old men ever on his radio show! I used to listen to him all the time on WBAI. He was hilarious. He had a good heart though, and was definitely entertaining. I'll miss him.

I read yesterday that he was 6'1"--what a shock, he seemed much shorter but then he was usually next to Fred Gwynne.
