New Sorority and Rush
I go to Virginia Tech and rush just started on Saturday. We got a chance to visit a new sorority that is starting on our campus when we visited all the other sororities on Saturday. The new sorority said that they'd be doing the rest of their rush after Bid Day.
My question is, I'm interested in them but I'm not sure if I want to pull out of rush cuz I'm still interested in some of the other sororities. I know I need to make a decision soon to drop rush if I decide to go after the new sorority. What do I do?

Here's my opinion ...
Stay in recruitment thru preference. Give all the groups you meet a chance .. maybe you'll find where you're meant to be. If, after the preference events, you're still more interested in trying for the colony than one of the established groups, don't sign a preference card. If you withdraw prior to signing a preference card, then you are not committed to any group and are still eligible to check out the colonization.
Good luck and I hope you find your home.

You follow your heart.
I was in a similar situation. When I rushed, there were 4 NPC sororities and a brand-new local that had just been founded the previous semester. The president of the local gave a short speech during orientation, and they had an information table during formal recruitment where PNMs could stop by, pick up the local's rush schedule, and chat with sisters in between parties. Then, the local had their own rush following Bid Day.
I got to the end of round 2 of FR when I realized that although I was very sold on the idea of sisterhood, none of the 4 NPCs was right for me. So I withdrew from FR, rushed the local, and found my home.
How far into recruitment can you go before you have to commit yourself one way or the other? I'd imagine that you could go all the way through pref if you wanted, and as long as you didn't sign a pref card and get a bid, you could still rush the new sorority. So I'd advise you to go into FR, and if you find your home, great... and if the fit isn't there, visit the new sorority.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

The first
Please take this for what it is...
I colonized a new chapter on my campus, instead of ever going through rush. But I had had a year to figure out without rush that this was the best for me. So stay till the end and then decide. Follow your heart, not the crush. Here is my thoughts.
Colonizing is a wonderful experience but hard. You are pledging a new chapter while condutting chapter business. You are more emotional tied to this chapter and its success. It is your baby.
You are also always seeing the established chapters with their set traditions and ways, and you think that you could have been in one of those. You always are thinking "how together those groups are". When in reality they aren't. They have struggles also. So remember that the grass is always greener on the other side.
I had many girls come to me and tell me "how cool to be the first" and you are... you will always be remembered as a colony member. I can tell my children that I was #33 of my chapter and I was involved in setting the traditions of the chapter. But it is work. You are setting the campus vibe for your chapter. Your chapter has a clean slate but you are also having a establish what your chapter is. So you get to help define your style, it isn't defined for you.
I don't know if this makes sense but I know that there are other Greekchatters out there that are colony members who can add to this. The pros and cons for being the first.
I wish you the best of luck. I don't know if you are a prayer but that has always helped me make my though choices easier.

What everyone else said!....
...and be sure you look around during the various rounds - the odds of the women who are at the recruitment parties being your sisters goes up as rounds go on. If you go to preference, really look around and do follow your heart. Where do you feel you belong??
I loved being a founding sister of my chapter so much that I went on to serve on national council for the past 9 years as Director of Expansion!
The new group on your campus has a lot to offer which you can't even imagine right now. Be sure you visit their national website for information on them including their programs and philanthropies. Something there might "click" with you as well.
Good luck and please do check back in and keep us posted.

I was a colonizing member of the recolonization of my chapter of Delta Gamma, and it was an amazing experience. We got to build the chapter from the ground up, and set our own traditions instead of following ones that were previously set. I wouldn't have traded my experience for anything, and if you think this is something you are interested in, I say go for it

I refrained from posting earlier because I'm clearly biased toward the group that is colonizing on your campus, but good luck! Keep us posted!

Rush problem,
Hey I think you should try to go for that new sorority. It took me forever to decide on a soroity and you need to remember there is the perfect one for you! It is ok to drop out of one because there will be more options. What happens if you stay with the first one who gives you a bid and you hate it!?!? Try researching it more, go to social events and hang out with some of the girls, new friends might just make your decision. Good Luck!

Any word?
Just wondering if we had any clue which way the events have gone?
