Is it the same as this story that I posted the other day?

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...threadid=73216

They released today that the UT freshman died of alcohol poisoning.

If it's not the same story, then my bad.

I think it is the same story. The first link worked for me, so maybe there was a temporary server problem earlier.

Unfortunate circumstances for yet another tragic alcohol related death.

Second death this year for that non-NIC GLO.

They also had a pledge die after a football game in CA.

The 1700 student deaths a year statstic is a little misleading isn't it?

Actually, they ARE an NIC organization (admitted in 1988 I think).

Asian frats are almost like gangs

But critics say that Asian frats are almost like gangs, and play to stereotype: tough guys, future wife-beaters that smoke and drink too much, and ache always to prove their bravado. One girl, whose ex-boyfriend befriended the Cornell Lambdas, said she always hesitated to attend their frat parties because she thought the brothers were “creepy.”

Hoosier, you implying that that biased view is the only thing Asian Greeks are? If so, I suggest you read more!

The University of Texas has withdrawn recognition of the fraternity until at least 2011, according to a December 20 UT press release:

http://www.utexas.edu/opa/news/2005/...ternity20.html

Edited to add a couple of excerpts from the press release:

Administrators in the Office of the Dean of Students began an investigation of the organization following the death of Phanta “Jack” Phoummarath, a freshman from Houston, on Dec. 10 in the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity house.

“Our investigation included interviews with members of the fraternity,” Brett said. From the information gathered during these interviews, university officials determined the organization’s activities constituted hazing, including the expectation that new members should consume large amounts of liquor at the presentation of new members and new members being required to shave their heads. . . .

The university is continuing to review facts surrounding the case to determine whether there will be referrals made for individual disciplinary action.

Right now, based on limited knowledge (two deaths in four months), I've got a pretty poor view of Asian Greeks.

We all (GLOs) are tainted by their actions, and the bad publicity which will continue for a year.

Rep. Vo calls for UT to reconsider frat ban
Punishment in fatal hazing case would destroy a valuable network for Asians, he says

AUSTIN - A Houston lawmaker is urging University of Texas officials to reconsider last week's decision to ban an Asian American-interest fraternity whose members were involved in hazing the night freshman member Phanta "Jack" Phoummarath drank himself to death.

Rep. Hubert Vo wrote UT President Larry Faulkner last week that the university should consider alternative punishments such as probation, community service or alcohol abuse training for the members of Lambda Phi Epsilon

Phanta "Jack" Phoummarath had a level of 0.50, according to Capt. David Ferrero of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, who has seen the autopsy report.

Rueben Gonzales, a UT professor of pharmacology who studies drinking behavior, said that level would be equivalent to "chugging a fifth" of liquor. He said the only other way to get to that high of a blood alcohol content would be for someone to consume several drinks an hour for 24 hours.
