So now, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are asking the public to help.
Beginning in January, police will put the faces of people wanted for robbery on billboards around Charlotte.
The City Council approved funding for the idea Monday night.
Anyone who sees someone on a billboard or has information about where that person might be can call Crime Stoppers -- and be eligible for reward money.
Each month, for six months, five people will be featured on two billboards each. Police plan to put the billboards in neighborhoods where they think the suspect lives or commits crimes. They will e-mail smaller versions to neighborhood groups and post fliers in stores and restaurants.
"We want to make it so uncomfortable that the person won't be able to go on with what they consider their normal lives," said Capt. Harold Medlock, who oversees a team of officers who hunt down robbery suspects. "They'll either have to turn themselves in or cease being in public."
Medlock said police haven't put together a list of worst offenders and don't yet know who will be featured. He said they will try to contact the person's family beforehand, and give them a last chance to turn themselves in.
I think this is great. We already have a billboard that shows how many accidents Charlotte has had this year. It's 24 THOUSAND PLUS right now. Told you all that the people in Charlotte can't drive.
