From the "you can't make this stuff up" file...

As many of you know, my husband and I are in the process of moving houses. We closed on our new house today. I was not there, as I couldn't get the time off work (new job = no vacation time), so my husband went to the closing by himself and took care of everything.

After the closing, he decided to drop by the new house to take a quick look around. When he got to the house, he found two cars in the driveway. He suspected intruders, so (instead of calling the cops like he should have done) he went in to investigate.

He found one of the sellers' teenage sons.

In what had been his bedroom.

With his girlfriend.

They were not exactly playing checkers.

The house, of course, had been emptied of furniture, so they were "not exactly playing checkers" on the hardwood floor.

I am suddenly very glad we've booked a cleaning service to go over the house tomorrow...

I hope that one of you have also told your seller that he or she will be responsible for the bill for cleaning up after the "not checkers" game! And if he or she balks, I'd tell the realtor - you should NOT have to pay for this!

Absolutely, the seller should have to pay for the cleaning, because who knows where else the teenage couple have not been playing checkers before your husband found them.

We did speak to our realtor.

We believe he got into the house using an extra key he had, that was not turned over to us at the closing. So all the locks in the house were re-keyed today, at the seller's expense. (We would have had them re-keyed anyway, but because of this incident, they had to pay.)

It was also made quite clear to him and his parents, that we could have had them both arrested for trespassing.

I visited the house this evening, and actually, there wasn't a mess. Maybe they had a blanket or something. *shrug* Still, I'm glad the cleaning service will be going through to remove any stray DNA that might be present.

I agree. Remember what it was like to be that age? Any place was a good place

It would have been a lot more of a problem if AEPhiAlums husband had called the police -- as he should have for his own safety.

"Not playing checkers" in someone else's house is a lot different than in a motel or backseat or where ever else.

This was an invasion of someone else's property.

agreed - it's pretty ridiculous to paint this as heartless on AEPhi's part.

They're teenagers? Great. Should have no problem finding somewhere else.

Maybe it'd be easier to figure this one out if you pictured finding two teenagers you didn't know boinking on your floor?

(come on - don't you remember what it was like to be that age?)

Boys might view this in the abstract a little differently than girls.

Exactly. Not to mention that the boy had NO excuse for not knowing that the house was sold - we had originally been scheduled to close on Wednesday.

The boy has a job. He could have paid for a motel room. There, they would not have been trespassing on someone else's private property, and moreover, they would have had a bed - which is rather more comfortable than a hardwood floor.

We told the story to our other realtor (the one we're working with to sell our old house). She told us a similar story... She was participating in a realtors' open house (all the realtors who cover a given town get together and go visit all the houses that have been listed since the last realtors' open house). They had called ahead and notified all the sellers, just as a realtor would do for any showing. So they arrived at one house, looked around downstairs, and then they went upstairs to find that the door to one of the bedrooms was almost closed. In came the mob of realtors to find a couple in bed! After they got back outside, they all started laughing... except for one woman, who just stood there looking shocked. So they asked her why she was so shocked. She replied, "I know that man... That's not his wife."
