Real World Detroit?

Rumors are that Viacom, MTVs parent company has rented an 8000 sq. ft. loft in preparating for Real World Detroit. The kicker? It's not in Detroit, it's in a trendy, ultra liberal and somewhat upscale surburb.

Here's the link

The article also says that they are currently fliming in Key West, which could be an interesting season with the hurricanes that have blown through there lately.

There is local speculation that they will begin filming in time for the Super Bowl.

ETA: That location is right near where we go to Coldstone Creamery for lunch for co-workers' birthdays!

there's always so many rumors. There were a bunch last year that it was Pittsburgh, up on Mount Washington, but I doubt it.

I'm curious to see how the Key West season will play out with all the lawsuits that have taken place and the neighbors trying to shut them down. Although I doubt any of that stuff will come up during the episodes.

Real World Detroit (or Royal Oak) IS true. It was confirmed on one the WRIF the other day. Their job will be working somehow with the superbowl. Royal Oak was chosen obviously for their plethora of bars, even though it'll be freezing ass cold then.

That show just needs to end already. When you start running out of cities to tape in, you know it's time to call it quits.

If they are going to film in Royal Oaks why don't they just call the show Real World Royal Oaks??

I mean don't claim a city if you dont want to live in it!

Royal Oak must be coming up in the world. When we lived in Berkley (just NW of Royal Oak) it sure didn't seem trendy to me. In fact, it seemed fairly "blue collar" to me.

Of course that was 25 years ago.

Hey, my big sister lives in Berkley.

She took me through Royal Oak when I went to visit a few years back. It was really trendy from what I remember. I remember wanting to go to bars there. But, my little sister was just turning 19. So, we did the only thing we could -- we went across to Windsor.

I mean, really...

Who's going to watch 'Real World Royal Oaks'?

Besides, we all know, instead of having to call it 'Real World: The Increasingly (and Suprisingly) Trendy Suburb just Northeast of Baseline--Royal Oaks', they did us all a favor and just said 'Detroit'. To add to that, Royal Oaks isn't really THAT big--they probably will spend the majority of their time spent there in the 'D--doing whatever it is that they do.

enigma_AKA

PS--I claim Detroit, even though I live(d) in Beverly Hills. Now what?!!

Well, Royal Oak has sort of come into it's 'trendieness' since the late 90's. I remember going there right after graduating (97) and it was just becoming hip. But it isn't big enough to have tons of stuff to do.

Why didn't they go to Ann Arbor? At least there are tons of different things to do there? But I guess getting to Detroit every day for work would have been a bit of a haul.

But saying Detroit is sort of false advertising. You think these kids will be thrust into a rough, very unfamiliar environment and that it might actually be more than a sex-fest...but nope! Same old...

Well, I say I live in Denver but really live in Aurora. How many people have heard of Aurora? I say I work in Denver, but my office is really in Centennial. Where?

When I lived in Michigan, I said I lived in Detroit, but really lived in Berkley. I said I worked in Detroit, but the TV station is really in Southfield.

I would guess it's not the first time MTV has used a "Real World (fill in the blank)" when the folks really lived in some suburb.

When we talk about where we live to others from outside our area, we tend to "regionalize" our comments and use the presiding metro area (DMA or ADI to media types). Otherwise it can take a lot more explaining.

I'm glad to hear that Royal Oak (there's no "s" on it, BTW), is coming up in the world. Back when I lived in "Detroit" it was just a gray little place where Murray Feldman (those of you from Detroit will probably recognize him) and I got hassled for videotaping a fake humorous "standup" for the going away party of a friend and colleague at the commuter rail line there. Our pal was a train nut.

I've always thought that too but as long as its the top rated show or close to it on the network, it won't go away anytime soon.

I never knew that. I just always pluralized the ends of the cities here (i.e. Bloomfield Hills, Beverly Hills, Grosse Pointe Woods, etc).

You learn something new everyday!

Oh and ditto on the rest. Who has time to explain 'Well, I actually live in the northern suburbs, which is approx. 16-22 minutes away from the edge of the city'? Be for real.

Hey Enigma,

The rest of those cities you mention do have "s" on the end.

As for your comment on explaining suburbs, what's even funnier in the Detroit case is that Southfield is actually a Northern suburb. For those of you not familiar with The Motor City, Southfield is the southernmost city in Oakland County which is just North of the Detroit city limits.

Confused?

I was with someone who had never been to the Detroit area before recently and they thought that Southfield was Detroit because of the skyline along 696
