Question about DZ

Hey, sorry to invade the dz board but I've been wondering....how did the turtle become your mascot?

The turtle is not the official mascot of DZ (we have no official mascot), and several of our chapters have other mascots b/c other locals on their campuses already used turtles when DZ first started using them.

The turtle was recognized in the 70's as an "unofficial" mascot to honor one of our Past National Presidents, who was an avid collector of everything turtle related, but it has never been officially adopted, and it is not mentioned on our national web-site along w/the other identifying facts (like emblem, jewel, colors, etc.). Many older DZs do not associate the turtle with DZ at all. So that's basically it!

I've heard every story from the turtle being our mascot because they can't hear or speak (tying in with our Speech & Hearing Impaired philanthropy) to a speech made by somebody important at some point that said something about you can only make progress by "sticking your neck out." I don't think anyone really knows, but I think turtles are a cute mascot anyway.

I think the "turtles are deaf" story was invented b/c people didn't know the info re. our Betty Heusch Agler, Past National President (I just remembered her name) and/or they just thought it sounded like a more fun reason (BTW-my daughter did her science fair project last year on turtles and we learned that they can, in fact, hear! They just don't have outer ears to gather sound like we do, so they don't hear as well...useless knowledge, eh?)

I think the "sticking your neck out" thing was what we were told as collegians, & I liked that reason. But when I went to HQ to interview for the chapter consultant position, we learned the truth.

mascot

I was also told that the turtle is deemed the mascot because each piece of its shell is different and comes together to make a whole...just like every member of Delta Zeta is unique and we all come together to make it whole.
