ncaa

so what do you all think about the ncaa ban on colleges who have native american affiliation with their mascot?

if they had bothered to ask the seminole tribe of florida for their opinion, they would have learned that florida state and the seminole tribe of florida have a very good working relationship and that fsu has the blessing of the tribe to use "seminole" as the mascot and chief osceola and renegade, the horse, as the mascot. the tribe makes the authentic osceola costume, and fsu is working with the seminole tribe to improve educational opportunites on the reservations.

Paraphrasing one Clark Wilhelm Griswold...

"...and I want to look them straight in the eye and I want to tell the NCAA what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit they are. Hallelujah! Holy shit... where's the Tylenol?"

At least Florida State ain't taking it lying down... they're threatening to sue the NCAA. Bully for them!

I attended Eastern Michigan when we were the Hurons. When the Board decided that they had to change the mascot to the Eagles, a chief from the Huron tribe attended and said that they were honored to have EMU's mascot named after them and didn't find it disrespectful at all. He asked them not to change it. They changed it anyway. I went to a couple homecomings after they first changed it but couldn't get into anything because they had changed the fight song, the cheers, everything. I still know all the words to the old fight song, but have no idea what the melody even is of the new one. I thought the whole thing was ridiculous. I still do.

A few months ago, the NCAA wanted the administration to give an explanation and justify the use of the University of Hawaii Warriors mascot.

The explanation given was that the name "Warriors" was reflective of the unique traditions of the islands..and while they represent values of an indigenous people, they do not include anything associated with anything Native American.

I think that the NCAA should be broken up so that the kids who bring in millions of dollars can get their fair share.

I never thought I'd say this, but I agree with Rudey . This is yet another example of the NCAA butting in where they perhaps should not (especially concerning Florida State!)

Rudey, You My Man!!!!

It just seems that so many take so much on themselves to decide for everyone else.

As I stated in a thread from way back, how long will it be before the Cowboys get Pissed all of the Steel Workers, Vikings, and even the Tigers, Eagles, Gorillas, WildCats, Hornerts ETC. get a Lawyer for their Causes?

an update : the seminole tribe of oklahoma voted (before the ncaa judgement)18-2 that the use of the image of chief osceola, his horse renegade and the name seminole did not degrade or insult them, and they did not consider it hostile. they supported florida state.

Have to say that I am pretty happy about this one, because the only way to end the Chief Illiniwek discussion is for an outside party to mandate it.

BTW, I thought it was nice that we were mentioned first in the petition. Because we are the most important school affected :-)

There's a brief timeline. Students petitioned to get the name changed back to Warriors sans any Native American imagery, the university changed the nickname to GOLD, students and alumni protested, and we got to vote amongst a list of non-desireable choices.

Once they made the decision to stay with what we were (Golden Eagles) the NCAA decision was announced and the school emailed us saying "Look how smart we were to not do this."

I so hope that FSU gets to play Illinois in a bowl game this year. No, I take that back. If we play Illinois, then we will have had a crappy season.
