Rushing at Sam Houston State University
I plan on rushing this fall at SHSU in Huntsville, Texas. I have been looking at about a million websites to get more information, but I am still a little lost. Is there anyone on here from SHSU or plan on pledging there in the fall? I wanted to know if anyone from my area had any more specific clothing suggestions, or just suggestions in general. Also I was wondering how competitive it is? I am a junior with a 3.03 gpa who is also african american and I was just wondering what some of yall might think my chances are. Thanks a head of time.

Here is a site that might be helpful www.shsu.edu/~slo_sad/greek.html
I am not familiar with the NPC side, but from what I hear from our undergrads there greek life is active. Try e-mailing the campus NPC / Greek life office to see if you need to pre-register for rush. They will be able to give more information. At Texas A&M if you were registered / enrolled in school the NPC orgs there sent out a booklet about the NPC sororities on campus. My sister got one.
Just from a location in Texas point of view, if you are going to rush in the Fall, then wear light comfortable clothes - Texas heat can be a bit much, even in the evening.
Best yourself. Best of luck.

Hm, I've never heard of Krimson Kourt Inc or Sigma Rhomeo before. Interesting history behind those.

I can't speak on Krimson Kourt, Inc. but I can speak on Sigma Rhomeo.
Sigma Rhomeo was the "little brother" affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho. We disassociated ourselves (SGR) with them a few years back, but they decided to keep the name and colors. Now-a-days most Sigma Rhomeo groups that I know of operate like a club. I don't know if they are organized into campus chapters and have a national body.

Well I looked at the websites and they aren't really updated. I was just wondering if anyone knew about the competiveness of SHSU. And also more recruitment tips. That would definately help, because I don't know too much about recruitment. Also could somoene tell me what they think my chances are. GPA 3.03, but my first semester I did pretty badly with grades. I am also a junior in a couple of organizations. I held 1 leadership position in high school over 3 years with the minority organization. Member of choir 4 years in high school. Member of colorguard in high school for 3 years. Member of step team for 3 years. Member of HOPE hispanic organization 1 year in high school. Graduated top 15% out of high school. As I stated above I did poorly my first semester at SHSU and this was do to sickness in the family. I am in 3 organizations on campus and have had two part time jobs since I have been here. I am also african american. In one of the organizations on campus I will be an officer next semester. I know this is a long post, but I am really excited/nervous about recruitment. I can't wait, but I want to make sure I am ready and that I do whatever I can to increase my chances of joining a good sisterhood.
Thanks in advance.

i do know that at some schools is texas(and elsewhere) juniors are not figured into the quota. in other words, juniors are freebies. say quota is 50 and xyz sorority has 50 girls they want to pledge. they can take those 50 girls plus one or two juniors for a total new member class of 51 or 52.don't know is shsu is one of those. i don't think you should worry about your grade point. it is pretty good, and frankly lots of people have an "adjustment" semester, where they figure out that college is WAY different than high school. and you weren't just "finding yourself", you had a family illness to deal with. you have proven that you are a good student . another plus in your corner is that you have gotten involved on campus, held two part time jobs and maintained your grades.i would think that dress for recruitment at shsu would be similar to that of the other larger texas schools-you might check out their panhellenic websites to see if they have wardrobe advice or call the panhellenic office at shsu. i would urge you to visit with former teachers, family friends, members of your church , co-workers(yours or your families) and get recommendations to each chapter at shsu. create a resume to aid these women in writing your recommendation. be sure to write thank yous for each recommendation that you receive. i do not know if being an african american will be a handicap in npc recruitment at shsu. i would hope not and i wish you the very best .
there are some excellent recruitment threads on greekchat that are not geared toward one particular campus and offer a lot of great general advice. just do a search such as rush tips or recruitment tips or advice.

Thanks that helps some and makes me feel a little better. I wasn't sure if a 3.03 was a good enough gpa or not. I am just really confused about the whole process though. I am the first in my family to join a sorority so it is a little harder to get advice, especially since none of my best friends are in sororities either. I am just excited to get the chance to start a legacy for my family. I have lots of little sisters and they all look up to me, so it makes me want to be a great example to them. Thanks for all your comments. Is anyone on here from Sam Houston? Oh yeah and about competitiveness, Does anyone know more info?

I'm from SHSU. We're trying to get our fraternity up and going. We're called Delta Sigma right now but we're trying to gain enough members in order to receive a chapter from Delta Sigma Phi. There was once a Delta Sigma Phi chapter on the SHSU campus, but vanished in the mid '90s. If you wanna check out some information about us, go here:
http://www.shsu.edu/~org_ds
http://www.deltasig.org
And don't worry, that 3.03 GPA is fine. I believe the minimum requirement for ΔΣΦ is a 2.50 GPA. As far as I know about the competitiveness, I personally don't see any huge competition or struggle to win one fraternity over the other. I know one day this past semester my former roommate's fraternity (Kappa Sigma) was knocking on dorms to look. Stuff like that I would believe.
EDIT: Wow didn't realize this was a year old. LOL. I was just doing random searches for SHSU and found this not realizing its age. lol nevermind
