Omega Psi Phi Brother Making a Difference

This was on the Atlanta news last night. Though it does not mention the Fraternity, the Outreach Coordinator (perhaps in his late 30's-40's) interviewed was wearing his letters (stitched, doubleback however you describe them) and from the sound of his program, it is making a difference. It is always great to see a Greek still involved in the community wearing letters. It was also was good PR!! Just thought I would share.

Church Hoping to Stem Gang Problem

With a growing gang problem in Clayton County, one local church is helping to find a solution.

Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in College Park opened its doors to nearly 200 teens Thursday, as it does every week, for a night of basketball as part of an outreach program.

The church sits across from North Clayton High School, where church officials said they’ve noticed many teens in trouble.

“Clayton County has been riddled with drugs, violence, and teenage pregnancies. We, as a church, decided to step forward and try to change some of that,” said Cecil Rivers, an outreach coordinator at the church.

Roderick Harvey, 13, said the program was helping him keep his grades up and stay out of trouble.

Torrin Green, 16, said the gymnasium inside the church has become something of a safe haven.

“In Clayton County, it’s not like there are any open gyms or anything. This is like the only open gym, and all the other places are like outside with fences, and fights go on every day,” he said.

Rivers said the program, which combines prayer and basketball, seems to be working.

“I’ve seen kids that I’ve seen on the streets with their pants hanging down, and selling and buying drugs now joining the Navy, now going to college, now they’ve changed their life, now they walk in here and say, ‘Would you all pray for me today?’” he said.

The church tonight also taught about 20 girls how to find employment and prepare a resume. Cecil Rivers

That's awesome. This is the exact type of thing I want to set up when I go back to Georgia...well, substitute basketball for tutoring and that's it.
