Smile pride and respect

I think now more than ever is the time for greeks to come together and realize that even though we all have different pins (or badges)- we are all greek. We all belong to organizations that we love and have brothers and sisters that mean the world to us.
Through all the stereotypes and drama that sometimes comes with being greek- don't forget why we are here.
On a personal note- my particular university's administration has decided to "re-evaluate" the greek system at my school This means that they are debating whether to let us stay or kick us out depending on whether they come to the conclusion that greeks on this campus contribute positively to the university's atmosphere. My point is that through this experience the greeks at my school have had to come together and support each other. I don't see why we can not do that nationally.Take pride in what you do and what your organization stands for.
For those who have been posting negative posts about greeks in general or about specific organizations- I'm sorry you feel that way.
As for the accused. Only you know the truth. It is always a shame when entire organizations and tainted because of the "supposed" actions of a few.
I guess what I am trying to say is keep your heads up and support each other. Don't forget why you joined the greek system and why you stay.

Well said. We all need to stick up for each other. These are hard times. I have to say this is "Greekchat" and NOT "antigreekchat". We should all remember we are adults here and that to trully have a meaningful debate it shouldnt be done by tearing each other down. At least those that feel that arguing is a productive way of dialogue in this forum.

Very Well said. What you said was very true. The whole greek systems is a very vulnerable system, therefore it is up to us to repesent ourselves well. We need to keep in mind what our founders envisioned when they created our respective orgainzations. Also we need to brush up on our history. Historically many greeks organizations worked side by side to aid the greater good.

Exclamation

I wish every chapter of every Greek organization and every national headquarters had a giant sign saying:

WE ARE ONLY AS STRONG AS OUR WEAKEST LINK!

With numbers in a lull, it seems sometimes like competition for members is so cut throat and the real reasons for Greek life are getting shoved to the wayside. If one chapter of your fraternity fails, the whole fraternity fails. If one organization on your campus fails, the whole campus system fails. We are all different - and we need to respect each other's differences and celebrate and support them instead of being threatened by them. Laugh if you want at the chapter that goes down, cause tomorrow it could be you.

By the way dzjusty - if your school is state funded (even a penny or 2) they can't just get rid of the Greek system - a law was passed against this.

How can a school justify this? How was a law passed? I guess it's good and all, but as someone who attends a school whose counterparts are destroying the Greek system (by forcing them to go co-ed and refusing them housing), it's a little questionable and definitely interesting.

Unfortunately, I go to a private university run by Jesuits. The Jesuit who is the president of this university has a reputation with the students for not being in favor of the greeks system- at all.
Hopefully the evaluation committee will see the truth- the the greek system here does contribute positively to what the university stands for.

Go to http://www.dke.org and click on the section called R.O.A.R. (Restore Our Associational Rights). It has a thorough timeline of H.R. 6 and what it means to Greeks.

I don't get the second part of your post about your school's counterparts forcing them to go co-ed and refusing housing - did I just not have enough caffeine today?

I guess I should have stated it better.
Dartmouth=making their Greeks go co-ed.
My school=refusing to allow us to live off-campus, or even have ample on-campus housing.

Cool

AlphaChi Girl - as soon as I looked at your profile and saw that you go to Brown I got it! Duh, my bad, or should I say my stupid.

Do you know anything recent about the situation at Dartmouth? I look at their newspaper online every once in a while, and it seems like it's gone from the hottest topic to everyone just kind of throwing in the towel. I hope I'm wrong - they have so much history and tradition there I would hate to see it fall to the wayside.
