Dear Ladies of Phi Mu,

Sorry to crash on your board but I have a question: Back in the 1950s, my Mom was a student at the University of Chattanooga ( now known as University of Tennessee at Chattanooga ). She was very interested in Phi Mu and friends with a lot of the sisters of Phi Mu but did not go through rush or pledge them due to lack of finances at the time. She graduated, taught school, met my Dad and raised me and she is now a retired elementary school teacher.

The chapter at UTC has been gone for many years now ( She would probably have to travel out of town to another chapter for iniaition ) but what I was wondering is: How can she explore the possibility of becoming an alum iniaiate of Phi Mu? Since the chapter at UTC is dormant, I guess she would have to see if there are any alums still in the Chattanooga area and do activities with them.

It would do my heart good to finally see my Mom be a Phi Mu.

P.S. I am also working on getting my Dad alum iniaiated into Lambda Chi Alpha.

Thanks in advance for any advice. God Bless.

Roy Roberts

From our national website, we have alum chapters in:

Cookeville
Jackson
Knoxville
Memphis
Nashville

Ignorant of TN geography, I can't tell you which is near Chatanooga.

Knoxville, Cookeville and Nashville are the closer ones to Chattanooga.

How does Phi Mu grant alum iniaitions?

Every one that I have known of has involved a current member approaching a potential AI. If she is still close with some Phi Mu's, one of htem could provide her an introduction to the local alumnae chapter.

Thanks I will have to ask her and see if she still has contact with any of her friends from college. There is not a Phi Mu Alumnae group in Chattanooga. This was the mid to late 1950s when she was in college.

If there are any alum/current Phi Mus from Tennessee on this board that might be able to help me out, PM me.

This is the sweetest thing I have heard all day.

I am not familiar with alumni innitiation but I think the advice of the other sisters sounds like a step in the right direction.

Your mom is very lucky to have a son like you...Good Luck

In order to be initiated as an alumni the initatiate must get permission from the Executive Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Usually when someone is initated as an alumni they are very close to a collegate chapter. My chapter recently had an alumni initation for a mother of a member who helped with everything. Contact the Executive Office.

That is so sweet! I have a friend who went to college in NY, never went greek, and is now joining AOPi in my mother's alumna chapter. These instances remind me that going greek isn't just a college thing, but it's a lifetime bond.

I agree with previous posts, it shouldn't be too difficult if your mom contacted the alumna chapters and spkoe with the chapter president.

Good luck!

Feel free to crash here any time!
