LAWRENCE, Kan. -- A University of Kansas fraternity was expelled Monday for multiple violations of alcohol and recruitment policies.
According to a news release, the Interfraternity Council Judicial Board voted unanimously to expel Phi Kappa Theta and asked the national office that the fraternity's charter be revoked until at least fall 2009.
The expulsion means Phi Kappa Theta will not be recognized as a fraternity and it cannot hold any social events. Its 35 members are barred from joining any other fraternity.
This is the first time the IFC has expelled a fraternity.
Phi Kappa Theta was notified of the ruling Monday and has five days to appeal.
On Feb. 19, police cited nine members of the fraternity after responding to noise complaints. IFC investigated and found violations of alcohol and recruitment policies, a news release stated.
"The message is very clear: the punishment for such willful violation of the rules will always be severe and swift. We absolutely will not tolerate such dangerous behavior," said Marlesa Roney, vice provost for student success.
