Phi Delt Suspends Northwestern Chapter

This just in from the student paper:

http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/vne.../41ee2ed335742

Not much detail on the reason(s) for the suspension, but it did come soon after the story in the Times.

When that article came out, I asked about whether dry fraternities like Phi Delt were able to drink outside of their houses. I guess this answers it: No.

Interestingly enough, I thought their Northwestern chapter would stay around longer than their Chicago chapter.

Update Jan. 20 '05: Reasons Cited, Process Outlined

The student paper reports Phi Delta Theta's reasons for suspending the chapter:

http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/vne.../41efSec98b658

The Jan. 20 article is in the "CAMPUS" section. Its title is "NYT article prompted suspension of Phi Delt."

A Phi Delt official confirmed that the New York Times article prompted the suspension. Underage drinking, poor conditions in the house, and the photos accompanying the article were mentioned.
(The article is avaiable in the "Ban of Brothers" thread here on GC. Besides the drinking, it does mention that the house was a mess, especially the bathrooms. The photos, as I recall -- I think you have to go to the Times site to view them -- show drinking, a bit of the house interior, and a member modeling one of those "Freshman Girls - Get Them While . . . t-shirts.)

The process that Phi Delt HQ and the Northwestern chapter will go through is described. The university has also suspended the chapter in conjunction with Phi Delt HQ.

I hope the chapter can get through this and emerge stronger.

Funny, I think that article was written by a Phi Delt alum.

The Phi Delts (and the other houses) at the UChicago campus do OK because the University has very very relaxed alcohol policies and has gone on record recently that they will not be changing or re-evaluating them any time soon.

Yes the University has relaxed alcohol policies, but when are they not a nationally dry house? Does their insurance coverage not depend upon alcohol consumption within the house? It's not an issue of the campus, but the fraternity itself.

Regarding the past two posts, yes, according to the author, he is a Phi Delt alum.

Phi Delt is "dry" nationally, so if this event happened at the Phi Delt House, on top of the "poor conditions" there, the chapter was probably in violation.

My question would be whether the national organization did any kind of independent investigation -- or pulled the charter just on the weight of the Times article.
