ATHENS — University of Georgia President Michael Adams sent a strong message to students Thursday: Classes are going to get tougher and tuition likely will increase as UGA strives to become one of the nation's top-ranked schools.

He used the annual State of the University address to emphasize the research university's need for more money and to warn that UGA's quality could decline if tuition was not raised to support the advanced programs it offers.

"Students at UGA benefit greatly from their experience on the campus of a research university," Adams told a group of about 175 administrators, faculty and students gathered at the University Chapel. "And in order to maintain the quality of that experience, we need the additional revenue of a tuition scale more closely aligned with the breadth of offerings here and with national norms."

He outlined plans to strengthen UGA's academic programs, putting a heavier focus on writing and community service. Surveys that show UGA students study fewer hours than students at other universities — and polls that rank UGA among the nation's top party schools — are an indication that academic rigor has not kept pace with the quality of the student body, he said.

A December incident in which a fraternity member was badly burned during a drinking game is further indication that students are not adequately being challenged, he said.

"The recent incident at the Lambda Chi house is of great concern to me, not only because a student was seriously burned, but also because some group had nothing better to do at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday morning to prohibit them from conducting a non-academic ceremony and playing drinking games," he said. "If there is a growing belief here that Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights are no different than Friday and Saturday nights then we have a problem and we need to address it."

Drew Yonchak, a fourth-year student from Lewisville, said some students probably do party too much, but he called it a personal decision.

"We all agree it's a party atmosphere," Yonchak said. "But we're still all here for academic reasons."

Got news for the Prez of UGA... but this stuff (well the partying) goes on a schools more academically challenging than his... in fact I'd say it happens more as students need to blow off steam from the pressure that tests, exams, papers, and practicals inflict... personally I never had a problem with any of the guys cutting loose in the middle of the week (did it myself quite a bit) as long as they keep it to themselves and let the other guys in the house sleep or study - so we'd tell em to keep it in the basement and keep it to a dull roar.

Agree totally.

But, once again, because it is a Greek Whether it LXA or any other Greek Organization, it comes down to Greeks!

If it was a GDI in the Dorm or apartment, or the Corp of Cadets at any Military College, there wouldnt be this big of a toodoo, doo day all day long!

Why is it that greek's on a college campus are always singled out. I'm 100% that the incident at the Lambda Chi house wasn't the only alcohol related accident on that campus last semester.

While at Umass, the greek system always had a bad reputation, no matter how much good or how long we stayed out of trouble. There were countless drinking incidents, rapes, accidents, etc., all over Amherst and especially in the Umass dorms.

I always found it amazing that the Umass greek system, probably a couple hundred students, was always to blame for anything that happened anywhere on a campus of almost 28,000 students. And even if an incident was reported that was non-related to the greek system, the news reporter would always find a way to work some past mistake by a greek into the story.

A little advice to any college president: You guys may want to clean up the mess in your own dorms first before you try to start a greek witch hunt.

Maybe, it is because the only Higher Profile Groups are Football and Basket Ball Players.

Well, you dont want to screw with them as they make money for Schools!

Hell, just read the sports pages about coaches and players, then see what is said about Greeks!

Just wonder if ALL GREEK ALUMS quit donating to Colleges, how big a Hurt would put on them!

I dont donate to my College, I donate to My LXA Chapter and am a Society Life Giver or what ever it is called to Int.

Greeks have a higher GPA, Give more money, are more active, do more for Charity and We as Greeks Get it shoved to us because of stupid individuals in Greek Organizations!

Think about all the scandals that have to do with big name sports programs at colleges. Whether it was recruiting with prostitutes, illegal gifts, rapes, parties, etc. that have all been in the news recently. I can't even imagine the cover ups that colleges have done for their sports teams. A double standard? Absolutely.
