Rho Chi?

Hi...I'm a little new to the terminology and such of the greek system. I've seen the title "Rho Chi" tossed around and I've been wondering what a Rho Chi is and how one becomes a Rho Chi.
Thanks!

The term Rho Chi was used to signify NPC Recruitment Counselors. The NPC did away with the name Rho Chi recently because another Greek organization had the name Rho Chi. Names for these counselors can vary by campus: Pi Chi, Sigma Rho Gamma, Rho Gamma, etc.

From ariesrising3's Greek Info Pages:

Recruitment Counselor - A member of an NPC sorority who disaffiliates from her sorority for the duration of Formal Recruitment. She will assist the PNMs during the process of Recruitment, answering questions and running a Recruitment Group. They cannot reveal their sorority, so they remain neutral and don't influence their PNMs. They are revealed on Bid Day.

ETA: After a sorority member has been initiated and becomes experienced in recruitment, she is able to apply to be a Rho Gamma. Those on the campus' Panhellenic Council select the women who will serve as Rho Gammas for the next Recruitment.

<--- is a rho chi. We still use the old-school term. Basically, a shoulder to cry on, ear to gnaw on, person to ask about recruitment and sorority life. Our duties include corraling rushees to open houses, handling party invites/responses, handing out bids, and being "in cognito" ...meaning no letters, no handsigns, nothing that can ID you as a member of any particular group. You're supposed to be as Panhellenic as you can be, which we all should be doing anyways.

Has anyone been caught? I mean, like does anyone catch on to what sorority you're in?

when i went through recruitment last year I completely misguessed my PX's affiliations. Our recruitment starts the first week back, which is the first week of January. I really want to keep it hidden, but a couple of times PX's affiliations have leaked, it's pretty fun to see the girls reveal their letters at the end of recruitment. I'll let ya know!

I'm sorry but obviously you cannot use the Rho Chi chant. However, you have the right attitude to be a Dream Girl of your Alma Mater's chapter. As such, you can make the pledges (and possibly some of the undergrads [and deffenitly spirted Alumni {sorry for all the parenthesis.}]) sound off the Whitey Tighty chant whenever you'd like.

I was never caught. Only one girl in my group figured out which house I was really a part of.

I was a recruitment counselor and our Panhellenic had very strict disaffiliation rules. At the end of spring semester, all recruitment counselors had to remove any sorority symbols from their cars, and were not allowed to wear letters.

In addition, we were asked to request that any sisters we socialized with in public during this time did not wear letters around us.

Over the summer, Recruitment Counselors met weekly with Panhellenic to learn how to be a counselor. We also had Panhellenic office hours to process paperwork from PNM's applications and to answer the phones regarding recruitment questions. We attended an overnight RC retreat and were given "Recruitment Counselor" T-Shirts to wear. (It helped to fill the void of not wearing our own letters!) RC's really bonded and developed a special sisterhood of their own!

During the week of recruitment, recruitment counselors and Panhellenic Exec are kept in a hotel. You weren't allowed to be alone. You had to be accompanied by another RC at ALL times, and that RC had to be a member of a different sorority. Also, during the week of recruitment, the RC's had no contact with their sorority, weren't allowed to call their sisters, talk to them if they saw them outside of recruitment events, etc.

It was a bit much, to be honest. But our affiliation was a secret until Bid Day. We made it a guessing game with our PNM's during recruitment, and they had a blast trying to figure out what sorority their counselor was a member of!

We were called Rho Chi's. Then NPC changed the official name to Sigma Rho Chi, and left it up to campuses to decide what to call sorority recruitment counselors, as Rho Chi was no longer an option (due to their already being a Rho Chi GLO-- I think it is a pre-professional honor society?). So now at my campus, they are Rho Gammas, or Recruitment Guides.

Last summer my daughter and I attended a recruitment information meeting in our town. One of the young women on the panel of sorority women had been SGA president her senior year of HS when my daughter was VP of the freshman class. My daughter had always admired this young woman and was so pleased when she came up to her and said hello to her. When my daughter asked her what sorority she was in she told her that she couldn't tell her. We were both surprised but didn't know much about the inner workings of recruitment.

During recruitment, my daughter saw that this young woman was involved in recruitment and learned about disaffiliation. Toward the end of recruitment my daughter's rho chi disappeared (don't know the story there) and the other young woman ended up handing out the t-shirts on bid day. When she handed my daughter her t-shirt, she told my daughter that they were now sisters. Can you imagine the screaming my daughter did? It was already wonderful that she had gotten her first choice but to also get to have this outstanding young woman as her sister was icing on the cake.

I'm not going to lie... we still say Rho Chi. However when we're saying it to potentials, we say Recruitment Counselor.

Everything is pretty much the same for us as what AdpiUCF said. The only difference on our campus is that starting May 1, Rho Chis are not allowed to have public contact with Panhel sorority members, except if they have a class together, and if it's in the privacy of their own home (which is easy because we are a commuter campus). Also, Rho Chis are not allowed to drink at parties since they have such close contact with potentials at these parties.

We were allowed to wear letters up until the end of fall quarter. I wore letters during break because I live in a different state and I know no one from my college here.

It'd be awesome if we were put up in a hotel, but alas! Because our recruitment takes place over the course of 3 weekends, it would be very very expensive.

We are supposed to be "discrete" in our socialization, meaning not obviously favoring being with girls of one group over another.
