CIAA to be Shown on National Television for First Time

(11/09/04 - NEW YORK) The nation's oldest black athletic conference will have its men's basketball tournament games televised nationally for the
first time this
season under a three-year deal with ESPN announced Tuesday. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship game will be shown on ESPN2

on March 5, live from Raleigh, N.C. ESPN Classic also will show the men's quarterfinals March 2, and the semifinals March 4.

It also will be the first NCAA Division II conference to be part of the network's championship week. The CIAA drew a record 104,500 fans to its 2004
tournament, the
third-most attended college hoops tourney.

"It has been said the CIAA is the best-kept secret because of the history, the fans, the players," commissioner Leon Kerry said. "After today it will
no longer be the
best-kept secret."

ESPN Classic will show seven CIAA tournament games live. ESPN regional television also will show five regular-season CIAA games in local markets.

The conference's 12 schools are Bowie State, Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone, North Carolina
Central,
St. Augustine's, St. Paul's College, Shaw, Virginia State, Virginia Union, and Winston-Salem State.

Prof- Do you think Raleigh gonna be able to keep the tournament? I saw on the news that Charlotte is making a serious bid for the tourney

I hope not - i want to get out of town - Raleigh does not have enough black culture.

EVERY YEAR I say I'm gonna come home to the tournament (although my school is MEAC) and I never make it. Unfortunately it doesn't coincide with my spring break here at work, so next year will probably be another year that my good intentions don't pan out.

I understand that it's a sight to see! The stepshow, and the guy that dresses up in flashy, dressy, different color suits each year are something else!

I didn't go to a CIAA school either but it is most certainly an experience...

CIAA Board of Directors select Charlotte to host 2006-08 Basketball Tournaments

Charlotte Edges Incumbent Host City Raleigh in Highly Contested Bid Process;
Tournament has Generated $53.36 Million in Economic Impact over 5 Years

HAMPTON, Va. --- Today, by a majority vote, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Board of Directors, made up of the 12 member institutions’ presidents and chancellors, voted to award the 2006 – 2008 Annual CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament to the City of Charlotte.

The decision was reached via secret ballot submission to the CIAA’s accounting firm, which tabulated and certified the votes. Each school representative was allotted a single vote. The vote split was not made public.

“We have enjoyed tremendous growth in Raleigh, and this was a tough decision that was made after thorough consideration and research,” said Dr. Mickey Burnim, chancellor of Elizabeth City State University and chair of the CIAA Board of Directors. “But as the stewards of this distinguished cultural event, it is incumbent upon us to insure that our conference, its events and its members’ scholastic benefits are maximized.

“At this time, we feel that the better option for growth and development is in Charlotte.”

The original requests for proposals were sent to the cities July 7, 2004 with a deadline for submission set for Sept. 27. Monday, Nov. 15, officials from both Raleigh and Charlotte presented their bids to the CIAA Board of Directors in Norfolk, Va. Subsequent visits were made to Charlotte Nov. 18, and Raleigh, Nov. 21 by CIAA Commissioner Leon Kerry in order to conduct a fact-finding mission, of sorts.

“I do not have a vote in this process, but it is my job to collect all pertinent information pertaining to the process so that the board (of directors) can make an informed decision,” Kerry said.

“This event has grown to these heights because of the hard work of a lot of people. When you are talking about an event of this magnitude, there are a lot of questions that have to be answered to provide an unquestionable level of comfort. My staff and I worked toward answering all of the board’s concerns about both bids. They did the rest.”

In 2004, the CIAA Basketball Tournament attracted more than 104,500 people and had an $11.5 million economic impact on Raleigh, generating more than $983,304 in local and state tax revenue generated from sales, hotel and meal taxes.

“We anticipate having another record-setting year in Raleigh in 2005,” Kerry added.

IF I were coming home for these events, it would be wonderful for everything to still be in Raleigh, because I could just leave my grandparents' house and drive 30 minutes to downtown Raleigh. Hopefully, Charlotte will treat everyone right. I hope it's not like the FAMU/BCC Classic. I understand that when the game was in Tampa, the city started acting rather snotty.

Since I moved to Charlotte in 2002, I have never been to the CIAA but will go in 2006. It will be great because it will be in Uptown Charlotte at the new Bobcats arena. Uptown Charlotte is really great. I can definitely give you the stay here, eat here, see this tour guide. <~~~~~ That means I will write it down and you use map quest to get there.

Sounds like an invitation to me too, Phrat! As it stands, I'll probably be coming to Charlotte in 2006 anyway, because I understand our Regional conference will be there - there's supposed to be a boycott against South Carolina, so Charlotte it is. . .but I may just have to treat myself to this little trip to the CIAA conference!
