Trek star to film movie in Iowa

RIVERSIDE (AP) --- Capt. James T. Kirk came home Tuesday.
William Shatner, who played the cowboy commander of the starship USS Enterprise in the 1960s series "Star Trek," was in Riverside to hold auditions for four small parts in a low-budget science fiction film he wrote with Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock in the series and subsequent movies.
Shatner told local residents that the working title of the film is "Invasion Iowa." He called the film "his baby," and said he's been dreaming of putting the story to film for the past 30 years.
He said he has a $4 million budget for the film.
Shatner and more than 100 crew members will be in Riverside over the next several days to film scenes for the movie.
The film's production company, Glacier Point Productions, will also be hiring several local crew members.
Although Kirk's hometown was never mentioned in the television series, Riverside adopted itself as the future birthplace of James Tiberius Kirk and holds a TrekFest every summer.
Kirk was born in Riverside on March 22, 2233, according to a James T. Kirk Web page.
Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry later made the southeast Iowa town Kirk's official birthplace, and a Star Trek documentary, "Trekkies," tells the Riverside story.
