Do AA and White Patients Get Equal . . .
Do African Americans and White Patients Get Equal Quality Medical Treatment?
A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine indicated that African American patients get lower quality treatment than white patients. The study showed that African American patients often receive care from physicians who have inferior qualifications or resources to those who treat white patients.
The team from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center did a phone survey of 4,355 primary care physicians who served 150,391 African American and white Medicare patients. The research team, led by Dr. Peter Bach, uncovered two key findings. First, African American patients visited only a small number of physicians (80% of visits were accounted for by 22% of doctors). Second, the physicians visited by the African American patients were less likely to be board-certified than those visited by the white patients.
