F.A.I.T.H. receives National Award!
Alpha Omicron Pi Receives National Award for New Educational Program
F.A.I.T.H. Recognized at Recent FEA Annual Conference
Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity’s FAITH educational program received runner up recognition for the 2004 HRH Fellow for Educational Program Development Award at the Fraternity Executives Association Annual Meeting July 10, 2004 in Keystone, Colorado.
F.A.I.T.H., Fostering Awareness In Teaching Hope, is the new educational program launched this past year for all AOII collegiate and alumnae members that addresses issues surrounding depression and suicide. This program was made possible through funding from the AOII Foundation.
Melanie Doyle, Executive Director of Alpha Omicron Pi, attended the event and accepted the award on behalf of the Fraternity. “We are very proud of this honor,” said Doyle. “Even more, we are pleased that we have been able to develop a program of such merit that meets the needs of college students today. We wanted to develop a program of true substance that tackled a critical college issue head on. Suicide and depression are real crises that demand and deserve real talk, awareness and attention.”
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among college students. One in 12 U.S. college students makes a suicide plan. F.A.I.T.H. highlights statistics, warning signs and, most importantly, resources for help. It also includes real life accounts from members who have dealt with these issues firsthand. In addition, it seeks to de-mystify and de-stigmatize depression and offers a questionnaire to identify symptoms.
Information is shared via an interactive CD-Rom and is augmented by a personal F.A.I.T.H. journal that provides extended learning and discussion in small group activities. These small groups allow collegiate chapter members to open the lines of communication to foster awareness, identification and hope.
F.A.I.T.H. is part of a growing educational resource library for the Fraternity’s collegiate chapters. The material was given to each AOII alumnae chapter as well. F.A.I.T.H. materials were also sent to each National Panhellenic Conference member. “Suicide and depression can affect anyone … no one is exempt,” explained Doyle. “We wanted to create a worthwhile program that reflected the needs of our young people – Greek and non-Greek alike -- as expressed by the Greek leadership of colleges, universities and other fraternal organizations.”
The HRH Fellow for Educational Program Development is sponsored by Hilb Rogal & Hobbs and is an annual award for members and full-time staff of the Fraternity Executives Association, its Foundations and their subsidiary organizations for the development, execution and ongoing impact of exceptional student leadership programs.
