Somewhere '80s rock fans are shedding a tear of joy.
Because everyone loves a happy ending, Tears For Fears founding members Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith have put the differences that led them to split up in 1991 aside and have put together a new album. Fittingly titled, Because Everyone Loves A Happy Ending, the disc due out on September 14.
While this is news, it's not exactly shocking. In October 2003 Tears For Fears performed on stage for the first time in more than 10 years at a mega-celebrity event in Las Vegas known as Andre Agassi's Grand Slam For Children. Then, in February of this year, they released the radio single, "Closest Thing To Heaven," which is the second of 12 tracks on the new album. Seven of the tunes were written by Orzabel and Smith together. Four are credited just to Orzabel and one is credited to Smith and Charlton Pettus.
The question now is can the boys from Bath, England recapture the magic that propelled a couple of their songs to No. 1 on American charts in the 1980s? It was certainly a magic that escaped them in their solo endeavors.
When Smith left the band in 1990, Orzabal continued to work under the name Tears For Fears, but the 1993 album Elemental and 1995's Raoul And The Kings Of Spain seemed more like solo projects. Meanwhile, Smith released a solo album called Soul On Board in 1993. He also started a band called Mayfield and released an album under his own label in 1998. Orzabel then officially released a solo album called Tomcats Screaming Outside in 2001.
