Would you date a relative of a friend?

Like the post says. What are your views on this? I see how it can get sticky if things don't work out.

This is sticky and bad (especially if the friend has family issues or the family as a whole is somewhat disfunctional). I'll pass on this showcase, Bob.

I totally misread the title of this thread as "Would you date a relative OR a friend"...I was thinking...what kind of sick, twisted...and then I pulled my head out of my @$$ and read it right and if I was still in the dating circle it would depend on how close the friend, if they approved, etc....basically, I don't know...

OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH....so this isn't just a "let's start a discussion" thread...this is an advice thread.....

Not that I have any good advice in this situation...I just thought I'd play Captain Obvious....I'm done now....

i've done it.

i dated a coworker's second cousin 2 years ago. she and i were really close. she actually had never met her cousin, but knew his parents well. so she set us up. we lasted 2-3 months but i really didn't like him. i had a name for him after i broke up with him that's not very appropriate for this thread......

she didn't mind that we ended it. i did it amicably and actually told her the reasons why i didn't think we'd get along in the long run. she was cool with it, but i did feel the obligation to explain to her.

so, tread lightly. it all depends on the people involved.

my sister dated her best friend's older brother... and they are now ex-best friends... I would probably say no on a brother or sister but yes to like a cousin or something of that nature... but it also depends on how close you are to this person... I would probably hurt any of my close friends if they were dating my brother and didn't say anything about it to me first... but casual acquantinces (I can't spell that word for the life of me) would probably be ok...

I would have to think long and hard before starting a relationship with a friend's relative....unless maybe I was friends with the relative, too. (Now, doesn't that sound somewhat convoluted? )

The guy I'm kinda crushing on right now is the brother of a friend of mine (not a SUPER close friend, but someone that I've enjoyed spending time with and gotten to know pretty well in the past year). Him and I have also become pretty good friends, too, and I don't know if anything will ever develop, but I enjoy spending time with him just as friends, as well.

I can't think of any personal experiences with anyone I know getting involved with a friend's relative, but if I think of anything, I'll let you know!

A long time ago I thought about setting up a friend with one of my cousins. I never did, and I am glad. The fallout could have been a disaster.

I don't think so. It would be very awkward, especially the aftermath when it's over.

If i thought she was hot i wouldn't hesistate. Any real friend should understand that things mostly don't work out in the long run anyway.

I took my best friend's brother to prom and would have probably pursued more if I hadn't been going away to school at the end of that summer. He knew it, and I know she figured it out, but she never had any problem with it.

OK, here's my story. My sister fixed me up with my brother-in-law's (her husband's) stepcousin. Things went well for about a week, then it was a disaster. Even though I think it's kinda funny, my poor brother-in-law felt horrible about it for months because things didn't work out and because the guy had acted like...well, a guy. There didn't turn out to be any hard feelings, but I still felt bad for my brother-in-law because I know it bothered him...he had told me that the kid was really nice and whatnot, and he felt like he'd lead me wrong or something. I don't know. But no, after that I think it's better to just leave well enough alone when it comes to family.

OK here is my story in a nutshell:

One of my alumna sister's has a 2nd cousin (her mom's cousin's son) that has hung out with us a few times. I initially wasn't attracted to him but then again those few times I hung out with him, I was casually dating someone else and really not getting to know him. Well lately I've hung out with them both more and my friend has always talked about what a sweet guy he is and I've observed the sweet things he has done for her. I don't know what happened but a light bulb went on in my head that maybe he and I should hang out. In any event I was thinking about how it could get really sticky if it didn't work out (especially because I am not looking for anything way serious right now and we have very different career backgrounds, I am in Social Work, he owns his own construction company, by the way he did comment to my friend "that he was afraid to ask me out because he thought I would only go for Ph.D types which reminds me of my other post on blue vs. white collar LOL). Well I had a talk with her last night about my concerns and she said she still thinks I should go for it. Both of them I believe would not discuss our private business either so I am not worried about that. Well he and I have been talking on the phone the past few days. He asked me out tonight for Friday and I accepted. Now that's all the juicy details you all will get for now
