2004 Tony Awards

(I searched and didn't see another thread on this, so I apoligize if I missed it)

So who watched the Tony's last night? Whatcha think?

Should "Wicked" should have won for Best Musical or did "Avenue Q" deserve the right?

And did anyone get to see any of the shows this year? Alas, I did not, but plan on it since I'm closer to NYC for the summer (yeah for NY state internships)

And a "rock on" goes out to Phylicia Rashad for winning the Tony for best actress in a play in "A Raisin in the Sun."- yeah for fellow greeks!

(and sorry for the melodramatic mood of this post- I'm a theater major lol)

I've not seen Wicked, but I have the soundtrack to Avenue Q, and it deserves it just for the song "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist."

Hugh Jackman's performance was great! SJP actually seemed nervous! I wouldn't mind seeing that or Avenue Q.

I wanted to see it but I missed it. It's great to see Phylicia Rashad win a award.

I saw Wicked and have the soundtrack to Ave Q. All I can say is that when I see Ave Q, it better knock my socks off, cause right now I'm feeling like Wicked got robbed. I love the Wicked tracks much better than Ave Q.

Hugh Jackman did have an awesome performance (my brother kept going, "I can't believe THAT is wolverine). I would like to see The Boy From Oz, as well, while Hugh is still in it, naturally. I think that is one of those shows that will fall apart as soon as the lead leaves (a la the producers, when the tickets sales plummeted after broderick and lane left).

I saw Wicked.

Two comments:

Since I didn't see Avenue Q, I can't really comment about who robbed whom, but our son (who wants to be a broadway star and I think saw both) says Avenue Q deserved it.

Second, while the soft hearted part of me was really pulling for Idina (saw her in Rent also), intellectually I think Kristin's performance showed much more versatility and depth and she should probably have won. Not that I'm unhappy with the outcome, though.

Either way, man, can those two women belt!!

I didn't see any play or musical anywhere this year -- sad to say -- but I was still pulling for Kristin Chenoweth to win because she is a sister (Gamma Phi Beta)!

Oh well, congrats to all the winners -- esp Phylicia Rashad -- she is a fabulous actress!!

I'm supposed to see Ave Q sometime this summer (although it may be hard to get tickets now...), so I'll let you all know what I think of it.

I haven't seen Avenue Q but everyone I know who has seen it (I'm in the dance/theatre world here) says it's amazing. I did see Wicked. Both Kristen and Idina were amazing, but my issue with Wicked is this: the singing is far better than the songs. The plot is ok, but nothing outstanding, IMO. The sets and costumes are wonderful! The dancing is an afterthought. It's an extremely entertaining musical with two amazing leads.

However, Avenue Q, from what I've heard, has great music, story and the way the humans use the puppets is supposed to be unreal. It's something new and innventive and edgy AND it's really good - I think that's why it won. I don't think Wicked was robbed.

Though I do agree with DeltAlum that Kristen may have had to do more with her character. Elepheba has some really "killer" songs and that's what you remember. With Glinda you remember the character and her antics, plus the beautiful voice. Comedy is HARD to do!

That's what most of the critics I read said as well, although I wonder a little if that has something to do with the differences in the music written for Glinda and Elphaba -- Elphaba doesn't have anything quite like "Popular," for example.

Ditto though on both women can belt -- fantastic voices!

I really like (most of) the songs, but then I've always liked Stephen Schwartz. And I know folks who agree with you on the music.

Ah well, chacun à son goût.

It's been 15 years since I've been to Broadway (Starlight Express, anyone?), so needless to say, I've seen none of them. I did watch the Tony's though & I CANNOT get "It Sucks to Be Me" out of my head!!!

Oh my Lord... the last Broadway show you saw was "Starlight"?! Get yourself to TKTS asap!

Definitely have that song and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked running on repeat in my head.

My boss went to see Wicked last night (he's obsessed, that's another story)- I guess that they worked it out in the script where they congratulated(sp) Idina for her Tony- during "Popular" when Galinda holds up the mirror, she said "it looks like a Tony" instead of her usual line.
