oh my gosh, have so much fun!!! I lived in DC for a semester when I was in college and I LOVED it! It's such a great city-lots of stuff to do, hotties to meet, connections to make, etc. Go out and do things as much as you can because you will have such a great time! Good luck!

WTH did they buy a tazer for? Its DC. Not the land that time forgot. Use simple common sense and you'll be fine.

Have fun!! I did a year in DC, and it was one of the best moves I've ever made! Where are you going to stay?

Just a little advise...if an area doesn't "feel right", its probably not LOL. BUt seriously, you'll love it...oh, and we got cicadas, so you can use your tazar for them LOL. It won't do you much good on the people...

Hey Everyone
I love it so far! I am staying in New Hall on the GWU Campus! I can't believe my mom bought me the tazer, she's a bit overprotective... Anyhow off to dinner with the parents...more later...

I grew up in MD and DC as long as you don't harass the bums you'll be fine no need for a tazer. DC isn't anymore or less dangerus then Dallas, New york, chicago, LA, etc. Your parents should travel more.

I too grew up in the DC area and it's fine. Especially the GW area. Have a GREAT time and I hope you have air conditioning. Take advantage of the city and just like any city, be smart.

Hey Everyone
Just to clear something up...my mother is just overprotective...both my parents have traveled quite often in the states and abroad. I'm just their little girl, all grown up, moving to a big city for the first time blah blah...I have common sense and a very good instinct so I'm not too worried and in a few weeks, my mother will be fine. Thanks for everyone's advice!

Adrienne, that's a normal mommy reaction, don't worry - my parents wanted to buy me pepper spray when I moved down to my apartment, which is two blocks from where my mom lived when she was in college. I'm moving to DC in a year (yikes!) and I'm sure they'll bring it up again then too.
It's just a mom thing, not a scared of the city thing.

Have fun in DC! I think one of the best things about living here is all of the free stuff to do especially in the summer. The Kennedy Center has a free concert everyday at 6pm and since you are at GW you can walk!

Update
Hey Ya'll,
I adore Washington DC! I just finished my second day at EMILY's List! The rest of the interns arrive tomorrow and I have an orientation the my 1st department meeting. I have been doing random excel projects for the past two days but my surpervisior promises there will be more interesting things along the road and that I will get to have input at meetings and on other events! Also, if anyone has been paying attention to the news, Stephanie Herseth's victory in South Dakota yesterday/today was a victory for EMILY's List since they support her and have raised a lot of money for her campaign! Anyhow, I would love to get together with any GC's in the area...my screenname is SweetiePieAMP
