Dream Job

Ya'll (yea I'm from the South) I sent in my resume on Monday to the top law office in Greenville, SC which is Leatherwood, Walker, Todd, and Mann. I have a paralegal certificate and I am crossing my fingers I get this job! It's the perfect job and just might pay decently, being it's a wonderful law firm, but then again, it might not. Cross your fingers, ya'll and hope I get an interview!

not yet. I noticed on my caller ID last week someone from the law firm called but didn't leave a message. I called them back on Thursday and Friday of last week but no one has called back because I DID leave a message both times.

Humph. One more grueling week at the job from hell.

Well keep trying to get a hold of someone. I think it's pretty rude that someone from the firm called but didn't bother to leave a message.

I did criminal paralegal. Yea, I called the firm 3 times last week and they haven't called back. I called the HR lady and left 2 messages on her voicemail and one with her secretary. I mean I thought 1 message was enough for someone to call someone back and 3 was gracious plenty. Who knows right? I still haven't heard anything back.

I also applied to Clemson University as the Production Manager at the radio station there. The guy that interviewed would've been the one to hire me and he said he'd call back Monday or Tuesday of this week. It's now Friday and not a word.

Don't keep calling... it looks desperate. Especially considering you haven't even interviewed there. You just sent your resume.
Firms are flooded with tons of resumes from attorneys, law students, paralegals, secretaries, you name it.

Also keep in mind that this was a holiday week and that a lot of people are behind. I know my firm has been crazy this week. That day off really adds a lot to the rest of the week. And if it's an attorney doing the hiring- sometimes they're not in the office for days at a time. I'm not sure who in the firm is in charge of hiring the paralegals, if it's an attorney or a staff person. It's one thing to appear eager and to follow up, it's another to be overly-so and keep calling.

You've expressed your interest. They'll either call and schedule an interview, or you'll get a letter in the mail saying thanks but no thanks.

Don't call there again unless they call you.

Ya'll I didn't get the job at the law firm. In fact, I didn't even get an interview. Working in a law firm is kind of like a HAVE to thing for me if I could have any chance of getting accepted into law school. I received the rejection letter today from the law firm.

Also, no word from the guy with Clemson Univ. Guess that means a no. I also applied and intertviewed on Saturday at Muzak (the people that play music in stores and while you're on hold on the phone). No word from them either. Another no, I assume!

I mailed my resume to WYFF in Greenville, SC on Monday so I am going to give them until Wednesday of next week to give me a call back. If they don't call, I'll assume that's another no.

I know lots of people who have gotten into law schools without having worked in a law firm prior to their application. Is there a school that requires this?

very VERY few people work in a firm before law school.....
there are some that do... but even if they do, it doesn't really give them a leg up for getting into law school at all. Occasionally it will help them get a job with that firm that they had worked for, but that's about it.

The school I am applying to looks more closely at LSAT scores & those who have work experience in government and legal fields. I don't know about other schools, but where I am applying, a resume is a requirement of the application package to their law school. That's why I said that working in a law firm will help me. The pre-law advisor at Winthrop even stated that working at a law firm will give me a leg up on others with no legal experience what-so-ever. I'll do whatever it takes, now, to get into law school, basically.

I mean, I'll be honest. I don't know too much about other law schools than the one I am applying to. If anyone can give me hints and tips, I would welcome them.

Thanks ya'll!

To what law school are you applying? I'm going to assume it's USC since I know they require a resume.

How long are you planning on working for until you apply to law school? A few years? A few months? If you only work for a few months that's really not going to make any difference at all.

Our office manager just applied to USC for law school and got rejected. She's been a paralegal and an office manager for 11 years....I don't know what kind of GPA or LSAT score you have, but hers was only about average, maybe a little better.

edited b/c I got confused.

I am looking to work at a law firm for approximately 2 years.

I am applying to USC-Columbia for law school. You guessed right, AXiD670. From the underlying message I have kind of received in this forum and others about law school, it seems I don't have a chance in h*ll of getting into law school. My grades weren't straight A's . . . far from it. I haven't taken the LSAT yet (I'm planning on taking it).

AXiD670, I would suggest your friend trying again to apply. I know of several people that didn't have stellar grades and were accepted to law school. They had superb recommendations and their LSAT scores were average. They also had superb resumes. I mean I am not saying your friend doesn't have all these things. I hope your friend gets in to law school sometime. Wish her good luck!

zta, I might suggest, if your scores were average, I have been able to improve mine 14 points based on what I scored last year and what I've been scoring on all my practice exams through the Kaplan LSAT class (the real thing is this Monday). I'm applying to a school where if I get what I've been getting, I'll be in their 75 percentile for LSAT scores and around their 50 percentile for GPA. Doesn't hurt that dad's a lawyer and I'm working as a legal assistant (I hope).

The LSAC is really a nice service though. Very helpful I guess if you're applying to tons of schools. I'd recommend going to your college library and seeing if they have a copy of this book (I don't recall the book's name) that describes each law school, their admissions standards, etc.. Good info!

Working as a legal assistant/paralegal (whatever you want to call it) has been great though. I'm learning tons about how a law practice works. fine.

Oh, and good luck!
