Los Angeles, CA - Taking abstinence education into the 21st Century, a new clothing line called Wait Wear gives teens and young adults the opportunity to literally wear their commitment to abstain from sex on their sleeves. Combining hip fashion and moral conviction, every Wait Wear item creatively demonstrates its owner is waiting until marriage to engage in sex. Buyers can choose from a wide range of clothing messages. The company logo, W² (pronounced W Squared), appears on high quality t-shirts and boxer shorts for boys, and t-shirts, tees, thongs and bikini underwear for girls. Encapsulating the phrase Willing 2 Wait, W² provides a symbolic badge youth can use to remind themselves and others of the standards by which they have chosen to live. Wait Wear also features items with slogans such as No Vow No Sex©; Virginity Lane, Exit When Married©; Traffic Control, Wait for Marriage© and No Over-Nite Parking©, to name a few.
Creator Yvette Thomas believes Wait Wear gives teens and young adults the ability to express their convictions boldly. "Wait Wear," she notes, "is about being proud to say, I'm saving my virginity until marriage, or in the case of those who have already been sexually active, I ve been there, done that - now I'm going to do it the right way and wait until I'm married." Because of its trendy design and daring attitude, Thomas feels that youth will be drawn to the clothing. Moreover, parents will appreciate both the message and the reasonable pricing.
Thomas's hope is that Wait Wear will tap into a national trend. Recently, abstinence as an option before marriage has gained significant support. President Bush increased federal funding for abstinence programs, doubling it from $135 million to $270 million. According to a recent study in Newsweek, more than one-third of U.S. high schools include abstinence in their sex education curriculums, and there are over 700 individual abstinence programs operating across the country. All of this, Thomas believes, demonstrates the current need for the Wait Wear line.
