Question Question

Hello ladies!

What kind of advise would you give a young lady that has researched all sororites, and has a difficulty choosing between two?

Hello twistedlyfe2001,
It can be difficult deciding what organization you want to pursue membership with. I have a few suggestions. Get a feel for the chapter members in your area and see what kind of programs they have that interest you. Above all else, take your time, there is no rush. When the time is right you will know for sure what organization you would like to be a part of.

How Long?

A friend of mine attended a graduate chapter rush 3 days ago and told me that when the question of how long the MIP would be came up, she was told that it would run until December of this year! She was in shock. Not to mention the cost of membership!

She had done tremendous research and is sure she wants to pursue, but feels that that is a loooooooooong time to be "on line" before being initiated into your sisterhood.

Is that a typical MIP?

Please disregard if this is an inappropriate question.

Each organization has its own timeline for MIP. If she wants membership and that is the timeline that the organization has stipulated then she needs to decide if it's truly something she wants.

Thank You!

Thanks for the clarification. I definitely understand what you're saying.

The reason I asked this question after she shared this with me was because the org. is ZPB and we both thought that there had to be time limits involved with MIPs in general.

Her understanding before going to the meeting and speaking with other greeks, was that if the rush/informational was this week the MIP and eventual (if she's invited for membership etc.) "crossing" would be completed by the end of Spring at the very latest.

When another guest at the event asked the chapter members she was told that they're not planning to "cross"/end the process until December.

My questions are:

(1) Could that just have been that chapter's way of "checking interest" or maybe just to get them prepared for a "process" that technically will NOT begin until the Fall?

(2) Is that "standard" for ZPB graduate intake?

It just seemed like a long time to her, that's all.

But like you said, only the prospective member can decide whether it's something they're willing to invest the time and effort in if that's truly a goal of thiers.

No one can answer this question better than the chapter in question. I would suggest asking the Membership Chair of the chapter in which a prospect is seeking membership.

Why is everyone in such a rush?

MIP is not a weekend process, contrary to what rumors are going around. And graduate chapters are very different from undergrad ones. ..

what is the big rush...?

I don't know about you ladies. . .

. . .but it seems as though everyone, and I do mean across the board within the sororities, is trying to get this intake stuff down to a science. Here's the thing: it seems as though they don't realize that there is only so much that they're gonna know now, and the rest they'll get to find out (hopefully) when they get ready to cross to the other side.

Ladies, I'm telling you, this is a different breed of women that's out there now. Where's the adventure in the pursuit? The element of surprise? I hope the person that was questioning this doesn't think that I'm making disparaging remarks against her, because I"m not, but many hopefuls want to know all the information right now! It's called membership intake process for a reason.

Ladies of Zeta, please forgive me if I've spoken out of turn; just thought I'd throw my $.08 worth, and I'm wondering if in other hopefuls you've come across if you've noticed some of the same things that I see on this board (GreekChat) as well as others.

Soror btb, great post. I, too, wonder why some are so anxious to know. What happened to the element of surprise?

So true!! But I try not to get frustrated by the questions because I'd rather people ask then assume. That usually leads to someoneo getting their feelings hurt, lol.

I'm trying to think back when I a prospective and while I was anxious I understood that everything would happen in due time.

Pardon me ladies of Zeta Phi Beta.

I just wanted to respond to a fellow non-Greek. I have this little motto I live by, "Once you're sure, there is no decision."

Quite frankly that means, if it's in your heart, if this is what you truly want, there will never be a toss up between two. No two organizations are the same, you seek, you reasearch, you land.
I encourage you to research a bit more. There will be something that you discover that leads you in the right direction.

That is a great statement.

The organization you choose, be it Zeta or any other one, should GRAB you. Not just tap you politely on the shoulder. Something about the organization should be screaming at you.

Just my $19.20.

re: intake process. Yes there is one. Unless you have been officially invited to join an org, that is all you need to know. Not trying to be harsh, but that is how it is.
