Wesleyan
Okay so I am in total awe that Wesleyan College is still existing. OMG. But I'm looking at their website and I'm not finding a thing about Greek Life, which actually suprises me. I mean the first two sororities EVER founded, were founded at their school. I just don't get it. That would be something I would be so proud of. I mean I think we and Phi Mu have benches on campus signifying our creation there.
Thoughts?

Nut Butting Into ADPi Forum AGAIN...
My feeling is that college websites are primarily marketing tools for prospective students. If Wesleyan played up their history with sororities it would beg the question: "Why don't you still have sororities?" and that's something I'm sure they don't want to discuss.

Does anyone know why Wesleyan ousted the sororities in 1914? I don't want to sound completely stupid, but I just don't get it. Reading my Alpha book it states things that Wesleyan did for us and Phi Mu. I get that things were different in 1914, but it's 2004. It's 90 years later. I don't know I just am thinking purely selfishly in thinking how awesome it would to have our Alpha Chapter back up and running. Along with Phi Mu's first chapter. Again, purely selfish reasons there.

The "P.C." Version
As stated in the "Wesleyan College Cluster:"
Wesleyan is also notable as the founder of the first sororities for women, Alpha Delta Pi (originally Adelphean Society) in 1851 and Phi Mu (originally Philomathean Society) in 1852. Both became national organizations, but sororities were abolished at Wesleyan in 1914 as "contrary to the spirit of a democratic age."

There is a tiny paragraph about the beginning of ADPi & Phi Mu, but that is it :
Quote:
Earlier in the decade, Wesleyan had become the birthplace of the first two Greek societies for women, the Adelphean Society in 1851 (now Alpha Delta Pi) and the Philomathean Society in 1852 (now Phi Mu).

Fun Facts to Know & Tell
Here's a picture of the old campus...it burned at some point and the college relocated North of Macon. The site of "Old Wesleyan" (as it's called) is now the main Post Office.
Another note: There is a beautiful house across the street from the P.O. where Madame Chiang Kai-Shek lived when she attended Wesleyan.

I went on vacation this spring break to Miami, FL with my 4 roommates, one of whom is an ADPi with me. As we were driving down, the other ADPi and I decided to stop at Wesleyen. We did get hopelessly lost while on the campus, but we managed to find a commemorative plaque and the ADPi fountain. It was grrrreat!

If you should make a visit through Georgia to Wesleyan and stop by EO, please consider making a donation (or pitching in a hand, call them first though!) to the memorial gardens there at EO. The gardens rely on voluntary chapter & alumnae support [beyond dues] for their subsistence and are a wonderful way to "give back" to ADPi
[See? Aren't I a good Alumnae Relations Chair? ]
