Emory results

Although everybody in this story talks good, actually the 2004 results are down about 50 from 2003.

Fraternity recruitment draws to a close; Greek Life greets many new members

By Mara Prager
Contributing Writer
January 27, 2004

To signal the beginning of fraternity recruitment, 352 men poured into the Dobbs University Center for Convocation last week.

A week later, 220 men received bids from 11 campus fraternities. At least 176 of those bids were accepted. The bids were given out after only one week of recruitment, as compared to previous years, when recruitment lasted two weeks. Assistant Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life Dan Richter said this year’s recruitment had one of the biggest turnouts in recent history.

The Pi Kappa Alpha and Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternities have the most new pledges.

Alpha Tau Omega Recruitment Chair Frank Giovinazzo said he has never seen a more organized rush than he saw this year.

“This year’s rush was the smoothest since I got to Emory,” Giovinazzo said.

Members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity said they are excited about getting to know their new rush class.

“We got a sick pledge class this year,” College senior Justin Brown said.

Chi Phi President Taylor Sherman said he is pleased with Chi Phi’s rush class.

“We found a good group of guys,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the pledge class grow together as they work as a group and become assimilated.”

Alpha Phi Alpha, which does not participate in the regular University rush process, will not accept new members until April.

Despite the consensus among many houses that the 2004 recruitment was a success, Delta Tau Delta Vice President Benjamin Streed had other feelings.

Streed said he thinks Interfraternity Council could have done a better job of organizing recruitment. Rushees were not aware of many of the differences among the various houses due to the shortened duration of rush, he said.

“Guys rushed houses they didn’t know anything about,” he said. “That’s a big deal.”

Not bad considering AEPi came back to campus not too long ago after the couch incident.

ISC recruitment ends with 360 bids

By Julie Zinamon
Asst. News Editor

January 28, 2003

At the end of Bid Day Saturday, nearly all women interested in joining a sorority received a bid, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Andrea Gaspardino said.

Of the more than 468 women registered for sorority recruitment, 360 women received bids Saturday, Gaspardino said. Eight women were not offered bids, while around 100 women chose not to complete the recruitment process.

Gaspardino said the number of withdrawals matches past years.

Of the seven National Panhellenic Council sororities on campus -- Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Phi Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Sigma Delta Tau -- five reached their quota of 55 girls, she said.

Most sororities would not release the number of girls in their pledge classes because the numbers are still fluctuating. Continuous Opening Bidding, in which sororities that have not reached quota can offer bids to women who did not receive one Saturday, started Sunday and will continue throughout the semester.

Intersorority Council President Alicia Goldsby said ISC recruitment was a success.

"I was very impressed with the way NPC Rush went on and the end result was good," Goldsby said. "Overall, all the sororities are pleased with this week's outcome."

She urged girls not offered a bid to a sorority not to feel disenchanted with the rush process.

"These things happen," she said. "They should go through recruitment next year and know that things will work out for them at the right time."

re: emory results

Hey..i'm in a sorority @ Emory...we JUST finished Formal Rush (bid day was Saturday, Jan 31st) =)...the results usually aren't released for sororities in the newspaper, for a few reasons, but mainly because of the "competition" among sororities (not really competition...just can't think of the word). I heard 3 sororities (it could have been 2) didn't make quota...but quota is 50+.
fraternities had their numbers released about a week ago...i don't want to re-post them if they have already been posted here...but if not, i can later.

I was on Emory's campus on one night last week and saw several young ladies in different groups with black dresses and heels on. Because of GC I said, "hummm....must be Pref night!" Then on Saturday I was on campus again and went to the DUC for a bite to eat when I saw dozens of girls with balloons chanting. I knew it had to be bid day!

BTW, one group, who will remain nameless, decided to take their group pictures on the front lawn of the hospital. Although my mother's room was on the 5th floor we could here them chanting quite clearly. It was not a distraction to her (my mother is a very active member of her sorority graduate chapter)--as a matter of fact she smiled when I told her what it was--I'm sure it disturbed some of the patients. Something to think about next time..

All in all it was all very cute

Ah, yes, the couch incident...we'll leave it at that. One of my sisters is dating an AEPi, and she's always hooking sisters up at date parties. Nice guys.

Fraternity Rush 2006 seen as big success

By Jason Singer
Staff Writer
January 27, 2006

A higher percentage of students participating in fraternity rush received pledge bids this year, despite a decrease in the overall number of rushing students.

According to Victor Felts, assistant dean of Campus Life and director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, only 291 students entered the recruitment process this year, an 11 percent decrease from the 326 prospective brothers who rushed in spring 2005.

However, 191 students — 66 percent of the rushing population — still received pledge invitations, the highest percentage since Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Dan Richter began keeping thorough records of the rush process in 2004.

Felts estimated that the percentage was the highest since the 1980s, though exact figures are not available.

Sixty-three percent of those rushing received bids in 2005, and 62 percent in 2004.

Fraternity members said they were pleased with the end results.

...

The system also allowed students to pay their recruitment fees via credit card for the first time in school history, and allowed fraternities to track prospective brothers more easily by being able to view each student’s profile online.

...

While organizers lauded Felts and his improved system, not everyone was completely pleased with the rush process as a whole.

Alpha Epsilon Pi pledge Daniel Mandel, a College freshman, criticized the selectivity of the process.

“At other schools that my friends go to, if you like the brothers and they like you then you’re in,” he said. “Here, it’s much more extensive . . . [and] I don’t think it’s necessary.”

...

“Less people rushed than last year, but we still have more men joining despite one less fraternity,” he said. “More men stayed in the recruitment process. That’s good.”

Prev. years:

'06 = 191

'05 = 205 got bids (Dean says 63% of 326 participants)

IS this the old AEPi? Are they still at Emory? That's a little weird with AEPi back, isn't it?
