Anyone watching this history channel? There is a new show on the Alamo, Texas, Davy Crokett, and Jim Bowie. Good stuff.

Very well made and clarifies a lot of misconceptions perpetuated by legend. I might cough up the $30 for the DVD of the show.

I am just curious (since I grew up 10 minutes from the Alamo) what type of misconceptions did the documentary clear up?

Missed the show, but I used to work for a decendant of Davy Crockett -- who now lives in San Antonio.
One thing I've always wondered -- did the Mexican Army stay at that hotel next door?

Mainly the overglorification of Davy Crockett's last stand at the Alamo; evidence points to Crockett actually being taken prisoner and executed. Early depictions of the Alamo story hardly make any mention about the Tejanos (Mexicans who fought on the Texas side) and painted a less-than-savory picture of white-vs-brown by depicting Mexicans as uncivilized barbarians.
Used to live in San Antonio myself a few years back; my Texas Masonic roots are in San Antonio as well.

There is a show on the Discovery Channel called "Unsolved History". They did one episode about the Alamo and one of the things they discussed was what really happened to Davy Crockett.
I am watching the Alamo documentary as I type this post. It is fascinating so far.

Yeah, a lot of that is stuff we discussed in my Texas History class last semester.
The Alamo wasn't fought as much for Independence as it was to make Mexico adhere to the tenents of the Constitution of 1824. That's why one of the flags flown over the Alamo was the mexican flag with the eagle and snake replaced with 1824.
There were just as many Tejanos fighting for the Alamo as whites.

Yes, and much of the Mexican cavalry is believed to have abused room service and the mini bars.
