website help!

I am making a sisters only site and I did a search and in all that stuff I didnt find anything about how to protect the pages from being found or accessed without the password...

Is there any way to make sure that a person has to log in, in order to have access to that page? For example...I dont want the page to be accesible by just saving it to a bookmark or something I want to make sure that they have to log in everytime just to bring the page up. I hope that makes sense...lol

I started a topic on this not too long ago. If you do search for password protection or websites in general, you can find info.

But to make a pp site, there are lots of java script codes you can write to protect a site. some of those are not as realiable cuz they can be hacked into and whatnot.
check with your server. mine has an option in the control panel where you can set up a remote folder and password protect that. anything that goes into that folder on the server is protected.

.htaccess all the way. Do a Google search for that term, and you'll hit paydirt. Do not forget the period in front of htaccess.

It's old, and not that efficient for adding individual passwords, but great if you are issuing one password to a group.

Just my 2 cents.

If your web host allows password-protected subfolders (subdirectories) you can set one up easily. Now if you want secure socket layer protection (SSL), that may be more complicated and cost more.

Once you have set up your password-protected page, be sure and delete your browser cache before logging in to the protected page. Sounds like that's what's happening as you view your site. Also, try and log in on a couple of other computers other than your own to see if the password protection works. (Again, be sure and clear the cache after you've done seeing the pages.)

AlphaSig, you beat me to the punch. I believe it to be a caching issue as well.

Lawryn, if you are at the end of your rope, I would be happy to set it up for you, provided you have FTP access to where you are working.

Just let me know.

Lawryn -

Haven't dealt with Geocities for many years, but I am inclined to say you are SOL. If memory serves, the file manager they use would probably not allow .htaccess files to be transferred - only your most generic stuff like .html and .jpeg, etc.

If I am wrong on this subject, the offer still stands for help.

alpha sig- that's what we have...

but with geocities... you aren't going to have much luck.

get a cheap domain name at like godaddy.com and find a good server. my friend runs one. they are currently switching to a new company but they should be up and running again soon. I can get you the contact info if you would like. Just PM me.

i purchased my chapter's domain name at namesecure.com and the webhosting service at glowhost.com. i also have my own site hosted on glowhost, and know of lots of other folks that use it as well. and setting up a password protected directory is extremely easy through their service. plus, they support virtually everything you could throw their way.

good luck!
