Earthquake in Virginia...

There was an earthquake about 4pm. I felt it...I don't live on the West Coast and am SUPER excited about it....

4.5 on the Richter Scale....anyone else?

Haha.. I think this is funny bc I never noticed anything.. and im not that far from it.. i was laying in bed in a daze... no wonder i didnt notice..

they were asking people on tv and some people said that felt it and others had no clue..

I just happened to be bending over to pick up papers. The whole house rattled (it didn't shake it just rattled)....I really thought it was a truck, or a low plane but didn't see anything. I randomly called my sister and said "I SWEAR we just had an earthquake". It was classic signsl...rattling for 30 ish seconds, car alarms going off, etc. Later on I was happy I was right.....and more importantly I wasn't going crazy....

too bad you didn't feel it!!

No....4.5 is a tiny earthquake....it appears that nothing major happened to anything. Buildings, roads, rail tracks, everything appears fine. I am sure it will be on the news later. It isn't like the big earthquakes in California.

Ok less earthquake more studying for exams...

I was working as a campus operator in '85 or '86. Our switchboard was underground and it was a slow day when suddenly the phones starting ringing off the hook. People were asking ME if we'd just had an earthquake. I was totally clueless, hadn't felt a thing and why did they think that a sophomore working in a basement would have any clue about what was happening seismologically? It did turn out that there had been a small earthquake, but boy that was a weird day at work! If you think you've had an earthquake, don't call the campus switchboard to ask about it!

Does anyone know exactly where the earthquake hit?? DO they know where the epicenter was?? I have a few friends that go to George Mason University and also William and Mary... I haven't heard anything from them about it.

I'm working nights this week, and I'm on my 2nd one, so my head is a little fuzzy, and I swear , I glanced at this thread and thought it said Earthquake in Vagina!!!

Then I re-read it.

I totally felt it. I was sitting at my desk and it started shaking! It was exciting! I ran out in the hall (I'm a freshman dorm counselor) and we were all excited... I'd never felt an earthquake before!

4.5.... For those of us here in CA, that was not an earthquake; that was simply a train passing by.

I know what you mean. I was a switchboard operator at my school, and I was at work the morning of 9/11/01. I was clueless about what had happened since I had a class at 9 that morning and then went straight to work, so I hadn't seen the news. The phone was ringing off the hook with people asking me if classes were going to be cancelled, and people crying to me because they couldn't get through to their family in the DC area (like I was in charge of the phone lines

). People seem to call the poor switchboard operator anytime anything happens!

As for the earthquake yesterday, I did not feel it. But then I was driving from Rockville, MD to Sterling, VA at the time, and I've been told it's not likely to feel a 4.5 when you're driving (especially so far from the epicenter). Besides, I think whether people felt it or not was pretty hit-or-miss. People in Bethesda, MD were telling me they felt it! I'm a little disappointed that I didn't feel it though!

Which is precisely why I said I don't live on the west coast....though my boyfriend lives in the Bay area and has never been in a quake higher than mine. I slept right through a big one in NY state that was felt really far away down into Pennsylvania and parts of Maryland......so I guess I have been through two.

As for the girl with friends at MASON and W&M. I go to Mason, some people felt it some people didn't. The Epicenter was just west of Richmond.
