Talking Formal Recruitment Spring '04

Zeta Omicron Chapter needs your help! Although I will be alum soon, I want to help out my chapter for formal rush as much as possible. At present, there are 5 sisters, 2 of which have been through formal rush. So, there isn't much formal rush knowledge within the chapter. In addition, COB events may not be allowed.

Our proposed theme (subject to change) is the 70s. The sisters were looking into Peace, Love, Phi Sig shirts. We have only 2 Round Robin nights and then the Pref Night.

So I am asking my fellow sisters, do you have any suggestions/ideas for us? Any advice, things that worked, didn't work.

Also, we are going to attempt to recruit graduate students. Any advice on that would be appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance! Kutztown hopes to add many new sisters to their pyramid this Spring!

Are there other sororities at your school ?? because if there are there is A LOT of rules that you need to know about. Do you have standards of sisterhood so you know what kinds of girls you are looking for ? You could also have your chapter brainstorm a "brag list" of things to make sure to tell girls about your chpater.. (any awards.. cool things the sisters have done etc..) Let's see... have drinks or food at your parties (if you're allowed) because food makes people happy... 70's I'm pretty sure you can easily decorate for that... one question how are you going to make your two parties different with a 70's theme ? you may want to think about that... GOOD LUCK with rush and let us know what happens I'm kinda Make-Shift MRC right now for my chapter and I've read the Panhellenic green book so I'm up on recruitment rules and all that good stuff so any questions please let me know !!

Regarding recruiting Grad Students make sure that you let it be known that you are recruiting them. That has been one of the best things for us - grad students don't know that they are eligible for recruitment. Of course you may have to check with your school as they may not let grad students go through formal recruitment and then the only way would be COB.

One of the things to have around for grad students is to let them know the time commitment etc. The biggest question I am always asked is do I have time to commit between grad classes, dating, etc. I let them know about what we do and show them how I balance my time. I usually get this question a lot more then the how do I relate to the "stereotypical" sorority girl who's 18 etc. Of course in my chapter we range in age from 17 to 40 and that is what I point out. Plus I mention that I've gained some fantastic friends who in a few years it won't matter what the age difference is.

Good luck with recruitment.

Because their premise is that PNMs aren't interested if they do not go through formal recruitment. I don't particularly agree, ie athletes, students with night class.

That's absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. Like you said people might have night classes or sports practice...and it's really demeaning to those who have received bids through COB to say something like that.

Who is thinking this up?? The student life director? Panhel?? You guys need a Greek advisor who knows what they're doing, like yesterday!

At Founders Day a couple of weeks ago we had a Vision refresher. We learned there that our sorority would rather us COB than do formal recruitment because you are supposed to KNOW the girls that you are bidding and that is why we have such a short New Member Period, because it should be less of the getting to know you (because we should already knwo them) and more of the history and info. That is what was explained to us.
So schools that do not allow COB are just redicculous!
Sorry for the major typos, Im tired and hungry!!

there are only 5 actives and someone is telling you that you can't COB? That is nuts!!!

PrincessPhiSig, last spring we did a 'back in time' theme for spring recruitment. we did a 50's and a 70's night. Our 70's night had disco balls and everything. Enjoy recruitment, and ask other local phi sig chapters to come help you out if they can...they should be able to help, since I'm sure they have sisters that have gone through formal.

If you need any help that I can do on the other side of the nation please let me know.

Formal recruitment is just as important as COB. I know Vision and COB are very similar but they are different. Vision is something that we should always do, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't 'do' formal recruitment.

Vision works 24/7 not just with COB events.

um....maybe this post sounds a little confusing but I can go into a lot more detail, but I don't feel comfortable posting it on here. if you would like to PM me I can explain myself better. sorry if I confused anyone

love ya all

And you know what else? We will be charged for not hitting total! So, please hurt the smaller chapters more so we can shut down. My chapter has tons of money to throw away on a fee for each vacancy we have up to total. And if we can't COB, I don't understand why we should have to pay!
