Thumbs up Battlestar Galactica

I was over at a friend's house (who has cable) and I saw an ad for the New Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi channel and was psyched. I mean, I am grandaddy here (33!) and I remember BSG in 1978! I was 8. Anyway, I got nostalgic and then found out that this renewed interest in BSG because of the new one resulted in a reissue on DVD of the one-season show. So I grabbed it on NetFlix.

So, now I am buying stuff on eBay and have been downloading desktops and screensavers -- and so I am a dork.

That was my favorite show when it was on. It got cheesy when they found Earth, but before that, it was classic!

I absolutely LOVED Battlestar Galactica. As soon as I heard that it was coming out on DVD (I had some on video) I went and purchased it. It comes in a cool Cylon head box.

I used to wish that in Galactica 80 that they would have followed up on Starbucks story it was left open ended when Dr. Zee had his dream about Starbuck and the "angel" after he was stranded on the planet. I think that Starbuck would have survived on the planet somehow. (Can you tell I am a huge fan of it).

I'm going to watch the new Battlestar but I am really concerned because they have changed the characters somewhat. Part of what was fun was Starbuck always getting in trouble with the chicks, especially when he was juggling Cassiopeia and Athena.

I think it's a miniseries right now but if it gets a good response they may want to turn it in to a new series.

What was your favorite episode? The one I can think of right now is where Apollo "died" and was revived by the light beings. Then at the very end they're all having dinner with Adama and can give him some info about where earth is.

Also, how many of you have read the Battlestar books that Richard Hatch has written?

Carolyn

p.s. wow, this is my 500th post on gc

Pegasus

My favorite was when the Battlestar Pegasus popped up out of no where.

Wow, you really are a fan! I am through the first three DVDs out of 7 and I am just through the episode where there is the fire on board and the Daggit (which was actually a Chimp and not a dwarf) saved the day. So I am well into it. And there is plenty of sex and suggestion of sex going on so I am pretty sure that all the sex coming up in this mini series (which is on the 8th and 9th of December and only a miniseries for now -- lets hope it becomes a series, eh!)

So, now I am addicted to grabbing stuff from ebay!

They put a lot of drama into one season didn't they? I am not sure what my favorite episode was but the one where Serena, Apollo's new wife and mother of Boxy dies is pretty touching.

Thats the one where the women are made into pilots because all the men are sick . . .

Supposedly the series got cancelled after the first season because the studio just didn't realize how successful and popular the show was, kind of like what happened to Star Trek. After all kinds of fan response the studio wantes to put the show together again but all the stars contracts had expired.

Thats why they were left with that pitiful excuse of a show Battlestargalactica 1980.

I never read the books are they any good?

And were sheeba and Apollo supposed to be an item? Was there some ssexual tension there?

The books were okay - they stayed true to the characters which was a good thing.

You know they never really developed the Sheeba and Apollo thing really well but I do think if there had been a second season you would have seen it develop.

Well, I am just through three of the seven DVDs and am awaiting the next three DVDs from NetFlix, so I am only just educated enough to respond to this, but yes, there was an energy -- but the last episode I saw before the series end was the episode wherein we met Shiva (Sheeba?) -- so I guess only time will tell -- I am wicked disappointed to be reminded that BSG actually finds the Earth. It does sound like it might end up sucking as a result.

But I have the _Making of The New BSG_ TiVo'd and am looking forward to seeing it, although my girlfriend saw it and tells me it looks pretty good -- although she is completely scandalized by the fact that Starbuck is a woman!

Did I hear somewhere that they said that the writers will never right a Romance betwixt Apollo and Starbuck... Starbuck seems a little butch, anyway.

I can't wait because its only a short time until the 8th and 9th on the Sci-Fi channel!

Re: Through the First Three DVDs

Sheez I hope the writers don't put a romance between Starbuch and Apollo. It would take many seasons of getting used to starbuck being a girl before I could stop imagining the old starbuck as dirk benedict having a sex change just to bang his best male friend lol . . .

Oh starbuck! Has the universe run out of women for you that you need to transgender and go after the men also?

Cool SciFi Channel + Battlestar

Of all people, I am glad it is Sci Fi channel that is doing the reinvention of one of my favorite shows as a kid. They did a good job with the Dune series, and I think Ron Moore, the director for this beast of a project, is well connected to his BG roots-- and he has a good track record with shows.
You know, you cannot trust this gem to just anyone with a resurection idea....

Well, they were both awfully pretty! Maybe like good soldiers based on Ancient Egypt they were openly and shamelessly bisexual -- in that case they would not have needed to go through all the surgery.

In this case, I think we really only have about 4 hours of miniseries, although I am really hoping for a series!

How about you? I would love for Sci Fi Channel to finally produce a show that didn't suck.

I mean there are enough X-Files episodes that they could have just done reruns!

I finally saw more detailed previews of the new BG. It looks like it is going to be a totally different concept with just names the same and that's about it.

From what I can get it looks like Cylons have been created by them and they look human. In fact Gaius BALTAR (notice he has a first name now) is dating one and I think is betrayed by them or some such thing.

Besides Starbuck, Boomer is also female and caucasian to boot. I didn't really see any people of color in the previews being shown now.

I think Boxy may even have become female in this new version although I wouldn't swear about that.

There is a comment made about bringing ships out of mothballs - it looked like they were talking about the fighters.

Well I will be watching it but I'm wondering how good it will be

Carolyn

I am a little frustrated by how few black folk there is on board -- still loads of Old White Men and a lot of pretty multicultural babes. The 70s was all about multiculturalism and not to be politcal but under Bush, its sort of a little Stepford and quite a lot like the 50s, anyway -- haven't seen an afro in years!
