Kappa Delta Rho Closed at Colgate U.

Colgate University has withdrawn recognition of the Kappa Delta Rho (KDR) chapter there for hazing. Chapter operations are to cease immediately, and the house will close at the end of the semester. Colgate's statement is on the news portion of its web site at

http://www.colgate.edu

The Associated Press has also picked up this story, so some GCers may see it in their local papers or on TV, especially in the Northeast.

FYI, Colgate, founded in 1819, is a small private liberal arts university in Hamilton, New York with a generally high academic reputation (and high tuition, too).

Sad news for Colgate Greeks, I'm sure.

These guys just don't get it.

They're accused of Hazing and underage drinking by local police, apparantely found guilty...

They, they have a meeting and vote to begin hazing again?

Frustrating.

Thumbs down

While the problem here is another "Greek Organization" is kicked off, They are not Members of any National group, but with the Greek Letters, it reflects upon all of us.

This should tell us all something! Period!

Tom, I could be mistaken, but I believe Kappa Delta Rho is a national NIC-affiliated fraternity. The Colgate chapter is/was their Delta chapter. It still remains on their national web site's listing of chapters, at least as of the middle of the afternoon on Sunday, 11/23.

You are right, of course, in saying that problems associated with any GLO reflect on Greeks as a whole in the minds of most of the non-Greek public.

Yup, Kappa Delta Rho is a national.
Here is their national's office press release concerning the incident.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11/21/03

GREENSBURG, PA - In October of 2003, the Delta Chapter of Kappa Delta Rho at Colgate University admitted to hazing some of its new members. After an investigation, both the National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho and Colgate University placed the chapter on probation. Despite both our and the University's punitive actions, we learned that the chapter continued to haze its new members. The National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho learned on November 20, 2003 that Colgate University, after conducting internal judicial hearings, closed the Delta Chapter of Kappa Delta Rho.

The National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho does not condone or tolerate hazing by any of its brothers. The National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho recognizes the harm hazing causes to individuals, the university community and the entire Greek system. Our policies explicitly prohibit hazing, and we provide educational training to teach our undergraduate brothers about the harm hazing causes. Hazing by any brother of Kappa Delta Rho is unacceptable and completely contrary to our motto: Honor Before All Things.

Kappa Delta Rho is a National Fraternity founded in 1905 in Middlebury, VT has 40 active chapters and 3 groups of intent. The Colgate University chapter is KDR's Delta Chapter.

No Honour in Hazing

Greetings all.

I must say that I am continually amazed when I hear stories concerning hazing in this day-and-age.

So many Fraternities include words like 'honour' and 'dignity' in their mottos or in their mandates, yet we continue to hear of those who choose to demean their brothers and pledges.

There is no honour in hazing.

I suspect we are somewhat fortunate up here in Canada, as many of our Fraternities, whether Locals or chapters of Nationals , have stood against hazing from the beginning. Still there are those who think that abuse brings solidarity.

My Fraternity, Gamma Beta Lambda, is very young: Only 40 years old, founded in 1963.

Yet, we, being a fraternity that bases its ethic on Warrior-Values, have long believed that treating pledges with honour and respect is the sure path to ending up with Brothers who will continue that tradition of respect.

Hazing and other forms of abuse serve only one purpose: To detract from the reputation of good fraternities North America wide.

And still there are those that are stuck in the "Good 'ol days". It's my hope that eventually these groups will weed themselves out -- either close because they have difficulties recruiting or get caught and be shut down by their respective HQs.

One day, it's my hope that we all speak of hazing in the past tense. Until then, ya'll keep standing for what you do.
