How do I find out if a chapter existed at a school in the past?
Ok, I was thinking how cool it would be if Kappa Delta had a chapter at the University of Southern California. While thinking about it, I started to wonder how I could find out if KD ever had a chapter there. Does anyone know how I might be able to find out if one ever existed there? I didn't see anything on the KD website and I couldn't find it on the USC website either. Where should I look?! Thanks!!!

According to the most recent (1991) edition of Baird's, KD has never had a chapter at University of Southern California.

[whipping out my copy of Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities...]
Kappa Delta has never established a chapter at USC. There is a KD chapter at UCLA, established in 1926.

Darn it!!! I talked to some people in KD and they said that Kappa Delta is generally not opening up new chapters but trying to bring back old chapters to campuses where KD has died out. Arrrghhh....someday I'm going to get KD on the USC campus!!!!!

we had a chapter of KD at USC from 1917-1964 - the Theta Sigma chapter
Very random that you brought this up, because the yahoogroup was just compiling a list of closed chapters
i'd love to see a chapter at USC... we could use more Cali chapters!

I sure hope that there was a chapter at USC, or else quite a few of the members of my AA are not KD's. Actually, they talked about re-opening the house in fall of 1987, but AI (at UCLA) burned their house the night before the presentation to USC, and KD could not afford to repair AI and re-open Theta Sigma.

You are correct, and it is in Baird's. There are tons of dormant chapters at USC, and I missed it.
Good luck on bringing the USC KD chapter back!

I think it is very fascinating to find out about where chapters of your GLO existed
Shortly after I initated into ADPi, I learned a chapter once existed at the university I attended before I transferred.. I thought it was really neat
During homecoming week, I was looking through some of the old scrapbooks that our chapter has kept at the house and found out that many sororities used to be on this campus as well including Kappa Delta, Delta Gamma, Delta Phi Epsilon and a few others. I find it really neat and wondered what the greek system was like back then

That's interesting. AGD closed in, I believe, the spring of 87. And Sigma Kappa came onto campus in the fall of 88. Interesting to think we could have had KD back then.
In the 45 yearbook, if I am remembering correctly, USC had about 21 chapters of NPC groups. KKG new on campus that year. Amongst the houses now at USC, KKG is still the youngest. Sigma Kappa which colonized in 88, closed in I think 94, when USC greek system's #'s declined. Several other houses also closed, but most were older than the KKG chapter.

An easy way to find out if your GLO had a chapter somewhere is to e-mail your headquarters--usually there's a "contact us" or "info@" on the website.
(That's quicker than Baird's, too -- if you're like me, one dip into Baird's means a half-hour just looking up stuff.)

The Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities is basically an encyclopedia of American (and Canadian) college fraternities and sororities.
It is now in its 20th edition, whisch was published in 1991.
You can order a copy for $59.95 (inclussive of S/H) from the NIC at 1-317-872-1112

dormant chapter?
Go to your college library, ask for yearbooks. A page might well
exist for your GLO, replete with composite and pic of house. A
snynopsis of the year's activities may be included. Bear in mind that many did not get their pictures taken or did not get included in their greek house due to pure sloth. Some chapters may have had 100 with only 45 pictured...but at any rate, a source.
Your headquarters will have the data, for sure
Baird's Manual will have info., too, but few details
Your alum office may/may not have or even care.
Best bet is college yearbooks to get profile of chapter.
Best feeling: revive an old chapter, bring back those old orphaned alums. Some chapter deaths were totally uncalled for and have poignant histories. Cheers! old Teke
