Rememberance/Vetrans day

I thought it was important to note that today was Rememberance/Veterans day.

Remember those who have fallen and those who are still fighting.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

Thanks for the post! Too many people forget about today! I always think about my grandpa (who survived combat in WW2).

Thank you to every veteran for upholding those liberties we hold so dear!

My mama's family has had someone in every war this country has ever been involved in - her eldest brother died at Anzio Beach, and my brother is named for him. My daddy used to say, "Your family couldn't get along with anyone!"

My grandfather fought for Indonesian independence against

1. The Dutch
2. The Japanese
3. Dutch and the Allied Forces

i'm grateful to him and his brethern everyday.

All the ROTC people on campus are dressed up today, and since there's a substantial amount of them, it's very cool to see. I'm the first generation in my family on either side to not enlist.

I just want to say "big ups" to my father-in-law, who was a POW in a German camp during WWII. I'm not Canadian, but I thank him for his sacrifice to make Canada the great nation it is today.

Oh, and to my Dad, a Korean War vet way up there in Heaven - I love you, and thank you.

I work on a research project at the VA. I call veterans on the phone and ask them a few questions, etc. Most of these men are so happy to hear from ANYBODY that they will try to keep me on the phone all day.

If your chapter is looking for a community service project, go visit some veterans (either at a retirement home or something like that) and listen to their stories. Some will talk about their combat experiences, some will just talk about fishing. But they would love the attention.

I LOVE MY DADDY! He's a Vietnam Vet! Big hugs for all the people who serve our country and help to keep it free for us all even the people who take it for granted!

Heaven isn't so far away, Sistermadly -- and I know your dad has all your pictures hung on the fridge in the break-room

Both grandfathers (mine - deceased, and Mr. AXO Alum's) are WWII veterans. Before my grandpa Buck died, he would always tell me that nothing in this world is worth more than our service to God and Country. He always made me so proud. Both my father and father-in-law are Vietnam veterans.

Thank you to them, and to all the service men and women who have done, and continue to do, their service to God and Country!

Question for my American cousins:

On Veterans Day, do you wear poppies as well?
This is what they look like in Canada (I think they wear them in the U.K. too...so it might be a "British Empire" thing...just wondering).

Some people do - the American Legion (or maybe the Lions, I forget) always sells them. My grandpa always has them - one on the brim of his hat and one in his car. I think that tradition is slowly falling out - I see many more elderly people doing it.

My new office is inside the VA office (which makes no sense to me, but oh well...) Anyways there was an interesting quote here about veterans that I wanted to share:

"The responsibility to care for veterans, spouses, survivors, and dependants can last a long time. The last dependant of a Revolutionary war veteran died in 1911. About 439 children and widows of Spanish-American War veterans still recieve VA compensation. Six children of Civil War veterans still draw VA benefits."

That was as of April 2003. I think its kind of neat that there are still direct links to people who served so very long ago

Actually the poppy has gone back to the black centre.
