connecting with a pledge...

anyone ever have a strong connection with a pledge?
i just finished an intervuew with one of our pledges...all i will say is that is was like 4 hours long, and in the end we both had ended up in tears. i connected so well with this guy. anyway, just wondereing if anyone has experienced the same thing

You didnt actually think that your only best friends in the chapter would be brothers who came before you or ones that you were initated with, did you?

Many close friends in the chapter whom I connected with were both older and younger. Not to be a dick, but why are you so suprised by the idea of having a strong connection to someone whom you and your brothers chose as having simular values and ideals as yours?

I agree. I connected with and still do with Thetas that are first semester freshman and those that are 25 year Theta Alumnae. i dont understand either why it's so suprising to you that you connected with someone younger than you. Part of being greek is learning about and interacting with others of all ages, not just those in your pledge class.

A guy shares a sweet story and he gets criticized for being surprised he connected with someone younger. Was no one else surprised when the person they felt closest to wasn't their big sister or brother, or the people in their pledge class? I don't even think he really sounds surprised, just excited about it.

That's awesome Josh. Keep building on that connection.

Josh, that is a very sweet story. I don't see anything wrong with connecting with pledges, actives and alumni. I think it builds a stronger organization/chapter. It also offers opportunities to learn about those who came before you and those who came after you. Learning from the past (whether it be accomplishments or mistakes) could help you with the future.

Anyway, I am the oldest member of my sorority at 30 going on 31. I connect with sisters (pledges, actives and my fellow alumnae) who are 3-12 years younger than me via email (some are also on Xanga) or in person. In the future, when we have sisters who are 20+ years younger than me, I'll still connect with them. That way they know about about the past and build on they future!

Keep building on those connections!!!

I, not only being # 1 in My Chapter and the Maturest (oldest) old Fart still work with my Brothers at My Chapter and try to get with other Brothers from other Chapters!

This is Great and means a lot to not only you, your Brothers, BUT, most importantly, this new you man!

Josh, I agree with CatStarESP4. I am also the oldest sister and newest sister in my Sorority and I have connected on all different levels with the my beautiful sisters of Gamma Alpha Omega, so don't be surprised that you connected with a pledge that is younger than you...Isn't that what BROTHERHOOD and SISTERHOOD is all about. Keep connecting and making your Chapter stronger

I had this happen to me very recently...I just transferred to a new school and a new A-Phi chapter, and I didn't really connect with anyone until after rush. Now, two of my closest friends here are both pledges...I admit I was kind of surprised, but it's funny cuz these 2 girls are my age whereas the A-Phi's I live with are younger, which may be the reason for the connection in the first place! Also, I guess we are both kinda new to this Alpha Phi chapter so that gives us something else in common. Either way I am so glad to have found these girls

I think you can look at it this way: when you were a pledge, you were the young'un, and you were loved by everybody already in the organization. Now you're the one that can give the love to the new young'uns. I think it's awesome!!

On a similar note, I'm finding that I have a whole bunch of things in common with my little sister (who is currently still a pledge) that I didn't even know about. I never thought that I would be bonding so closely with her, and I'm excited to spend time with her after her initiation!!!

I of course connect with all SAIs but I know what you mean about REALLY connecting with someone...I've had that happen before.

The great thing about being Greek is you can connect with people despite age differences. When I went to our convention this summer, I connected with everyone from new members to women who had been sisters for over 50 years! I love my SAI family.

When we did rush for APO, we'd usually have the actives sit in the room and the rush chairs would bring rushees to sit with actives (rush chairs matched people at random, just as they came in). My last active semester, the rush chair brought a girl named Leah to sit with me. We clicked instantly...after about two minutes you'd think we'd known each other forever. Of course she decided to pledge and she became my little that semester. (In fact, a lot of the brothers didn't believe that we'd just met at Rush...they thought for sure we knew each other before that!) She's still one of my closest friends and I am going to be in her wedding next year.

That's definitely one of the awesome about being Greek. I've run across people who I would have never before crossed paths with before. You find kindred spirits that way.
