Mentally ill black man beaten and dumped in ditch
INFAMOUS TEXAS JUSTICE AT WORK: Mentally ill black man beaten and dumped in ditch.
(Oct. 8, 2003) In the East Texas town of Linden, the FBI is helping police to determine if the beating of a mentally handicapped black man left unconscious a road was a hate crime, reports the Associated Press.
Forty two (42) year-old Billy Ray Johnson has been hospitalized since the Sept. 28 attack with head and facial injuries, including bruising to the brain.
Authorities theorize that a group of white men took Johnson to a party, beat him up and then dumped him out in the country. He was found in a ditch near the road in east Texas.
Johnson's cousin Lue Arthur Wilson told the Texarkana Gazette, "was just like somebody taking a 6-year-old child out and beating it."
No arrests have been made but a jailer has been fired after withholding information about the assault.
