Sigma Nu fraternity is hosting its third annual Burgers at the Beach today to raise money for the American Red Cross Norman chapter.
The fraternity expects to have 500 people at the event, said Mike Nicholas, aerospace and piano sophomore.
There will be home-style burgers, a volleyball tournament and sand everywhere, including on the floors of the Sigma Nu house, Nicholas said. The environment is expected to be entertaining and laid-back.
Six to eight teams of six people each are expected to play in the volleyball tournament starting at 6:30 p.m., Nicholas said. Trophies will be given to the first-, second- and third-place teams.
The purpose of this event is to give back to the Norman community. The city of Norman has done so much for the OU students, and this is a way to show that students appreciate what the community does, Nicholas said. He said the fraternity hopes to donate more than $2,000.
The American Red Cross is an agency that provides relief when disasters occur, said Kristen Collins, executive director at the American Red Cross Norman chapter. It provides service for big and small disasters. Whether the disaster is a house fire or a hurricane, the American Red Cross steps in to give shelter, food and care.
"We are very touched that Sigma Nu wants to make a difference in our agency," Collins said. She said the American Red Cross is thrilled to do any type of partnership with OU.
Who knows how many people the chapter could help with their donations? Collins asked.
The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sigma Nu house at 1300 College Ave.
Tickets are $4 if purchased in advance and $5 at the door. Burgers at the Beach is open to anyone who wants to help the fraternity support the American Red Cross, Nicholas said.
