'Sorority girl' comment insensitive to assault reality
'Sorority girl' comment insensitive to assault reality
In Thursday’s issue of the Daily Wildcat, staff sports writer James Kelley wrote, “LSU had its way with the UA like it was a drunk sorority girl.” As the director of the ASUA Campus Acquaintance Rape Educators and as a student of this university, I am disappointed that the Wildcat would choose to publish Mr. Kelley’s statement and trivialize the serious issue of sexual assault. Nearly one in four college women are the victims of an attempted or completed rape. The great majority of these assaults are committed by someone the victim knows and involve alcohol use by the victim, perpetrator or both. The scope and magnitude of this violence makes sexual assault not just a women’s issue, but everyone’s issue. Mr. Kelley’s statement not only trivializes rape, it tries to make it humorous and normalizes this criminal and violent behavior. By letting such a thing be published, the Wildcat harmed its own reputation as a professional newspaper and showed a lack of concern for the safety of the students on this campus. We are all responsible for ending sexual assault, and I hope in the future the Wildcat will do its part.

First of all I'm not trying to be little the seriousness of rape with this post (and by rape I mean actual rape not getting drunk and then regretting it the next morning). Rape isn't defined as any sex you can't look back and be proud of. That being said I don't think he was alluding to rape at all.... I think a quote would help explain!
Quote:
Boon from Animal House: Now, she should be decent looking, but we're willing to trade looks for a certain kind of morally casual attitude.

Now this being said, I still don't agree with them publishing it, it makes it appear that all sorority girls are morally casual or slutty if you will which is certainly not the case. I wonder if Mr.Kelly could even get the average sorority girl, let alone have HIS way with her!!

That is messed up. I think he was trying to copy the Dan Rather-isms from the election, and failed miserably as well as offending hundreds of women in the process.

Kelley's comment was totally out of line on all levels.

As a sorority girl who was initiated at U of A, that comment truly offends me. I find it in complete lack of taste that he used the comment of a sorority girl being drunk (and being raped) as a comparision to the football game.
No offense to the wildcats, but unfortunately the football team sucks. They sucked last year and this year doesn't look any better. But that in no way jusifies him making that comment about sorority girls. It's completely uncalled for.

I think that James Kelley won't be getting any for a long time.
Sports commentators have used increasingly violent words to describe games for many years. For example, Team A murdered/slaughtered/brutalized Team B. I think that Kelley took it much too far. They all should probably tone down their language.

That comment was totally out of line. I liked that student's response to Kelley.
