A Different Perspective to September 11

Living in DC, I am well aware of the horrendous acts displayed on September 11, 2001 and will never ever forget where I was, my emotions, etc. My heart goes out to everyone who lost a loved one, knew someone who perished, knew someone who knew someone who died, or simply are still struggling to come to grips with the horrific acts.

However, I also wanted to wish a happy birthday, happy anniversary, etc to anyone and everyone who was born today, got married today, got engaged, got out of a parking ticket, was accepted into a sorority/fraternity, had their first kiss, fell in love, adopted a new pet, ANYTHING that would cause for a celebration.

While I am IN NO WAY trying to diminish or set aside the tradegy of this day, I also know that this day is special and happy for many as well. And I just wanted to say happy birthday, etc to those who have reason to celebrate today.

Agreed - my future father-in-law's birthday is today, and he was deeply affected as we all were by the Sept. 11th attacks. I think he feels like he can't celebrate his birthday because of what day it is.

September 11th falls on a Saturday next year, and nearly every hall we looked at was open. While I do think this is a day and an event that should be commemorated this year and in years to come, I hope that we can begin to move forward from it as well.

This is a really excellent point. I doubt if many of us have given this much thought.

It reminds me of a smaller situation which occurred here in Denver on a different date.

A few years ago, the Denver Chapter of the Delt Alumni Association started having a Founders Day celebration. Since we couldn't find an exact date for the founding of the Fraternity (long story about missing early records), we chose a Thursday in April for the first one. The next year, we chose the same Thursday in April, but it happened that it fell on the first anniversary of the Columbine High School shootings.

Life simply has to continue, so we planned a moment of silence, and moved on. Sometimes you just have to.

This country has had many terrible situations over the years as I posted on another Thread. So many tragedies, but as DeltaAlum just said, life must go on even during the Mourning period.

That is what this Country is Founded on, In the face of adversity, we will prevail and carry on, But Never Be Forgetting!

So, I die Tomarrow, there will be a new born to take my place. Hopefully it will be a better place even though I have had a pretty damn full life.

I had Good Morning America on while I was ironing, so I was semi-paying attention. A couple had decided to get married on 9/11. The couple said that all of their friends were like why do you want to get married on 9/11, why would you want to? The woman responded that while it was a tragic time, they had to move on, and I believe she said, well no one from my family was directly affected by it.

Another story the show did, that I did watch/listen to as I was getting ready was about the babies who were born that year who lost their fathers in the attacks... I believe the number of babies was 67 (give or take a few, in the 60s definintely). They showed a video of a mother and her son, the mother points to her late husband's picture and asks her son, who is that? And the son says, daddy. And she asks, where is he? And he says Heaven. And she asks, who's he with? And he says God. I thought that was really touching.

Mr Munch's father's birthday is today too. He has decided next year that he will celebrate it a day earlier--partially because of this, and also because one of his good friends' birthdays was on September 10 (the man died recently).

I understand completely....my step-father's birthday is today, and on the day of the attacks, it was actually his 60th birthday. It was a really difficult time for him and I think that he still has problems with it. But as aabby757 said, there are reasons to celebrate today, in the midst of something that was so horrific to all of us.

A co-worker of mine celebrates his birthday on 9/11. He's had a rough couple of years. It's kind of hard to feel good on that day now. I feel for him.

This may sound weird but... My birthday is September 13th. At work, we celebrated my birthday yesterday afternoon, September 11th. While there was the obvious sadness of the day (morning), celebrating life in the midst of death is always refreshing. As a geriatric counselor, I'm always happy to hear of babies being born about 9 months after the death of a loved one - it's a sign of life going on.

We celebrated one of my friend's birthday last night. Two more have birthday's today. So at midnight it was party for everyone.
